Chapter Twelve

Mid-Winter Holiday

“Hello Larry and Jimbo!” shouted Tom as he burst through the front door of the Twist of Fate Bakery, shaking the snow from his shoulders and taking a deep breath.

Ah, there is nothing like the scent of freshly baked bread and cakes, thought Tom.

He had taken a carriage from the University as soon as he could find an available one and was bursting with excitement to see his parents. Not even the grouchy little goblin driver was able to dampen Tom’s spirits — even though he had to repeat himself four times before the goblin understood where he wanted to go. Looking around at the front storeroom, he was surprised by how small the bakery looked compared to when he had last seen it.

“Howdy,” replied Larry and Jimbo in unison while bobbing their large heads in Tom’s direction.

He almost thought he saw their mouths twitch upwards in a smile, but he must have been imagining it. Tossing a present at each of them, he ran into the kitchen where he found himself engulfed by his mother in a large hug.

“Oh, Tom, we missed you so much . . .” said Patsy Twister as she let go of him to blow her nose on a handkerchief, “. . . we didn’t expect you so early.”

“Been working hard son?” asked Jacob Twister while sticking out his hand for Tom to shake.

At least one thing never changes, thought Tom, as he shook his father’s hand.

“Absolutely, dad, I sure missed both of you. How is business?”

His dad began to explain in detail about how business had been since Tom had last been there, but his mother interrupted him to tell Tom to go upstairs, unpack, and wash up — in that order.

“We are closing the bakery a little early, and are going to have our Holiday dinner tonight,” said Patsy with a beaming smile, “Jack will be here again this year.”

Tom had half wished Jack would not show up this year, but knew it was because he was still feeling guilty from the way he had treated Jack the last time they had talked.

Walking out of the kitchen and back to the front room, Tom saw that both Larry and Jimbo had opened their presents and had already put on their enchanted glowing scarves that he had given each of them. The glowing red scarves gave them a menacing look, with the red light making their faces look almost angry. They both thanked him in unison. Going upstairs, he unpacked his satchel and prepared himself for the holiday dinner.

Studying his room, Tom could’ve sworn it had been larger before he had left to go to the University. He put Alison’s picture on his small bed stand and flipped through his well-worn Magicians War cards as he put them in the enchanted box that Samantha had made for him. Not feeling like eating the chocolate turtles before supper, he released a few of them from the bag and lay on his short bed as he watched the small chocolate turtles flying through the air in his tiny bedroom.
