“Step to the right. Place your personal items in the tray. Remove all jewelry, watches, belts.” A desk sergeant spoke in a monotone, robotic voice as each new person was brought forward in line.

The officer escorting Gladys moved up with her and held the tray while she deposited her earrings and watch into it.

He jabbed a finger at her fanny pack and reluctantly she unbuckled the red bag and dropped it into the bin. So much for using the lock picks or smoke screen. She’d just have to wait for Sam to come through with a lawyer.

“Name,” the monotone voice droned, the man’s eyes never leaving the computer screen.

“Gladys Hill.”

“Crime,” the sergeant said next.

“Absolutely nothing,” Gladys spoke before the officer next to her could even open his mouth.

“Charged with murder,” the officer answered. He frowned at her.

The sergeant typed, ignoring them both. He’d probably heard it all before and then some.

“Take her to the first holding cell on the left,” the sergeant said with absolutely no change of pitch.

“When do I get my things back?” Gladys asked.

The officer ignored her.

“And my one phone call?”

He shrugged. “Not my call. I bring you in and the rest is up to the jailers.”

A door slid open in front of them and Gladys wrinkled her nose at the smell of body odor. The air was thick with it even though the small room with clear glass walls was empty.

“In you go.” The officer pointed into the little room as if Gladys couldn’t figure that out herself.

Not seeing any way out of it, she stepped inside. The door immediately rolled shut behind her with a very final sounding clink.

Gladys snorted. Clink. That must be why they call jails and prisons ‘the clink’. She’d have to remember that to tell Rex when she got out. She refused to even consider the possibility that she wouldn’t get out. After all, she was innocent.

Minutes ticked by.

For the first twenty, Gladys stood next to the door and watched everything around her. She looked on as people were escorted from the holding cell across the hall to a large desk where they were fingerprinted and handed a stack of folded clothing. She grimaced at the sight of the folded blue jumpsuits. She hoped she didn’t have to wear one of those used things.

For the next twenty, she gave up and sat down on a long bench bolted to the wall. Her knees hurt, her lower back hurt, and based on the bench, her derriere would be aching in no time.

After that, she lost track of time. It could have been twenty minutes or forty-five.

All Gladys knew was that she sat far too long in the holding cell and yet all too soon it was her turn to be called to that big desk.

The big-eyed guard with the grim smile that she’d watched escort countless men and women over to the desk stood in front of her door. When it rolled open, he didn’t speak; he just flicked a finger and beckoned her out.
