Marie Morin

(1649–1730)

Marie Morin began her Annales (1659–1725) in 1697, leaving vivid descriptions of domestic life and portraits of such towering figures as Jeanne Mance, Marguerite Bourgeoys, and Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve. She was the first nun born in New France. Her brother Germain was the first Canadian priest. In 1659 she was a boarder at the Ursuline Convent where Jeanne Mance and three Religious Hospitallers stayed en route to founding Hotel-Dieu of Ville-Marie. At 11, despite family opposition, she determined to enter that order, and became a novice at 13. Possessed of excellent business sense, she was appointed depository several times, and elected as the first Canadian superior in 1693 and 1708. Her invaluable “domestic chronicle” of the foundation of the convent, its destruction by fire (twice), grave financial concerns, siege, extreme cold — “their house having holes in more than 200 places” — with its engaging flashes of humour, was rescued from the fires, but has yet to be translated into English.
