Chapter Thirteen

Toad knew something was up the moment she backed away from him and exited the kitchen. No. Scratch that. Something had been off since before they left the clubhouse. Esmeralda was spooked—and it wasn’t the failed kidnapping attempt.

He considered giving her space; then he heard a door close in the distance. The sound set off alarm bells. What did she have to say that was so private she needed to go into another room and close the door? Slowly, he followed the direction of the sound.

The doors to the right of the living room were open, so he walked through the room to the hallway on the opposite side. Of the two doors off the corridor, only one was closed. Without hesitation, he approached it. A quick test and his suspicions were confirmed. It was locked.

It only took a minute to go back to his truck to get his lock picks. In no time he was standing on the other side of the previously locked door. Standard locks on interior doors were child’s play. Toad didn’t waste time perusing the interior of her bedroom. He stalked toward the next closed door, then the next—performing the same routine until he laid eyes on Esmeralda again.

She was standing in the rear of a walk-in closet clutching the phone to her ear. Faintly, he heard the person on the other end speaking to her. His gaze raked over her from head to toe before he erased the space between them. Plucking the phone from her limp digits, he put it to his ear.

“Hey, Coral. We’ll call you back later. Princess and I need to have a talk.”

“Toad, you’re my boss and we’ve always been cool. But—”

Toad interrupted what he knew was coming. “No need for threats. The princess and I just need to have a little chat. She’ll call you later.”

Unlike the last time he confiscated her phone, Esmeralda looked anywhere but at him. There was no indignant complaint. She didn’t even question how he came to be inside her locked closet. No. No words were spoken as she pressed her palms to her stomach like she was trying to hold her insides together. It was obvious to him that whatever she was hiding away talking to Coral about had her all twisted up inside.

Sliding her phone into his pocket, he ran his fingertips down her arms. Goosebumps followed the path of his digits and he watched as the pulse at the base of her neck increased.

“I think it’s time you talk to me, Princess. I know something’s been wrong since we left the clubhouse. We’re not going a minute longer without talking about it.”

Taking her hands, he tugged her out of the closet and into the bedroom. Sitting on the chaise lounge, he pulled her to sit beside him. Holding on to one of her hands, he released the other.

Cupping her face, he made it impossible for her to look anywhere else except at him. He didn’t like the anxiousness he read in her expression.
