Chapter 13
Marty Myers
We were interrupted from any further planning by the bell, signaling lunch. The guys had the same lunch period as me and the majority of those here in the dueling club, so we filed out of the hall in a mass, headed for the lunch hall. We found it was already fairly packed, as the rest of the first-year teachers had decided for the students to take a break from the summoning rituals for lunch. They had missed the first lunch period that they had intended to use and were now overflowing the second lunch period, instead. Jason, Charles, and Borick, who seemed to be getting accustomed to the other two, drug me in line with them, and then when we had our food. Instead of trying to find seats at the packed tables, they took me outside and around to a small park where a few of the older students were eating away from the dining hall, and its crowds.
âThis is one of the small parks that are scattered here and there on the grounds for the nature spirit-types to make use of. Many of the older students know where they all are and use them to get away from some of the crushes you encounter in the packed halls,â Charles explained.
âThanks,â I said, âI have never been around so many people and for some reason, itâs been bothering me since I got here,â I said while fiddling with my bracelet. We ate in silence for a minute, woofing down the food like hungry boys do.
When we had finished off everything on our plates, Charlie said, âAndrew, you should have seen your face when Master Horatio called for your roasting. I thought for a second as it started you were going to faint right out of your chair.â
âI canât say as I would have blamed him if he did,â James said. âMarilyn was being brutal in there. Man. She has some serious hate going for you, Andrew. You had best watch out for her.â
âI already am,â I said as I recounted our earlier nasty meeting in the halls.â
Towards the end of my story, Borick looked ready to kill someone, while Charlie had went pale and sickly looking. âMarcus is a bad seed,â Charlie said in a quiet voice. âI heard his family paid a ton of hush-money last year to keep a couple of the other studentâs and their families from filing formal charges against him.â
âMarilyn is almost as bad as that degenerate,â Borick said. âShe could have just acted with honor and challenged you herself again if she felt so strongly, but she is taking it too far. Andrew, if anything like this happens again, you must go to Master Horatio and tell him about it. With his earlier proclamations about Vendettas, he will not tolerate such behavior even from someone ranked as high as she is among the duelists.â
âYes, I suppose you are right,â I said. âI am hoping that after the way he called
