Alex and Liam resembled drowned rats at the scene when they arrived. They seemed surprised to see Sam as she and Bob approached them.

“What is it with you men? Why don’t you ever use an umbrella?”

Alex shrugged. “Two reasons, one because I don’t happen to possess one.”

“And the other?” Sam asked, sensing she shouldn’t have bothered by the glint in her colleague’s eye.

“I wouldn’t be seen dead holding one, it’s hardly image-enhancing, is it?”

“Image-enhancing? You’re hopeless, Alex Dougall. What have we got, anything useful?”

Back in efficient copper mode, Alex pointed at one or two people in the crowd standing under the canopy of a few of the nearby buildings, doing an excellent job of sheltering them from the soggy elements. “A couple of witnesses. Both saying the same thing.”

“Which is?” Sam probed.

“The victim got off the bus and went to walk across the road, which was relatively clear at the time, what with the lights changing. When out of nowhere, this car came blazing towards her. The woman stopped in the middle of the road, appeared to be glued to the spot, unable to dive for cover. One man said she seemed mesmerised. I’m thinking she knew who the driver was, got a good look at him before the car struck her.”

Sam surveyed the area in front of her and then she lifted the umbrella to peer over her shoulder. “Ouch! Not so good. Which direction did the car come from?”

“Over from the right. The lights had changed here. One bloke said he thought he saw the car parked up and move out of a space, while another man said the car flew at the woman, but he thought it was waiting at the lights.”

“Either way, sounds like some pretty severe inaccuracies we can do without,” Sam admitted with a groan.

“I know, very annoying, boss,” Alex agreed. “We’ve taken the statements down from the two men, but we’re also asking the rest of the crowd if they saw anything and getting nowhere fast.”

“Bloody rubberneckers,” Bob said through gritted teeth. “You’d think they’d have something better to do with their time on a foul day such as this.”

“Human nature, it’s the pits at times.” Sam lowered her voice and gestured for Alex and Liam to lean in to listen to what she had to say. “The woman died. Her injuries were far too severe for the doctors to save her.”

Alex struck his thigh with a clenched fist and shook his head. “Fuck, I had a bad feeling that was going to be the case once the witnesses described how fast the car was travelling, and the fact the driver didn’t stay around to face the music. Do you think this was intentional, boss?”

“It’s seeming more and more like it to me.” She glanced around at the buildings. “You know what I’m going to say next. Any CCTV footage we can find is going to be a bonus. That should be our next step, to seek that out.”

“Already on the case, boss. The laundrette opposite and the TV repair shop both have CCTV.
