Chapter Twenty-Five
The next morning when Lucas and I came to the breakfast table, we found Rodney sitting between Festus and Rube. The ratâs whiskers looked freshly scrubbed, and heâd brushed his sleek fur to a high gloss.
âDonât you look handsome!â I said, kissing Rodneyâs cheek. âAre you feeling better today?â
Rodney grinned and put his head on his clasped paws, feigning a snore. Then he pointed at Festus and indicated the werecat had given him a present.
âSleep makes a difference in any crisis,â Lucas agreed, bringing our coffee from the sideboard. âMyrtle kept Addie last night. Jinx and I both passed out cold. What did Festus give you, Rodney?â
The rat nudged the werecat, who backed his ears and rubbed at his whiskers with his paw. âI had an extra grooming brush. So what? Youâre married to a lightweight, Jinx. Lucas went home early. The rest of us passed out, too, but not in our own beds.â
I stopped with my coffee cup halfway to my lips. âWait. What? All of you?â
âAll of us,â Barnaby affirmed, approaching the table with excruciatingly careful steps. Sinking into a chair, he said, âI fear I no longer have the head for intoxicating beverages I possessed as a young man.â
Lucas wanted to laugh, but he held it in. âCouldnât Moira give you something for that headache?â he asked. âOr couldnât you do something for yourself?â
âMy loving wife informed me that if I chose to carouse at my age, I deserved to suffer the consequences. As for my magic, I attempted to cure myself but was too nauseous to complete the incantation. Jinx, dear, would you mind?â
Before I could comply, Moira joined us and said, âLet the old fool suffer a bit longer. I will relieve his discomfort in another hour or so.â
I turned at the sound of shuffling footsteps. Beau stumbled in, sat, and immediately rested his head in his hands.
âOh my God, Beau,â I said. âNot you, too.â
âMiss Jinx, please lower your voice,â he groaned. âMy head is on the brink of splitting open like a ripe melon.â Duke, never far from Beauâs side, let out a soft whine and laid his head on the colonelâs knee.
Rube appeared no worse for wear. âI told you two not to go swilling coon moonshine,â he said. âWe brew that stuff up in a rusty dumpster and age it with old paint cans. Humans just ainât got the stomach for the good stuff.â
Picking up on just how out of hand the bachelor party must have gotten, I felt my ire rise. âIf you all got Chase so drunk, heâs going to be sick at his own wedding...â
From the hallway, Chase said, âDown, girl. The groom stayed sober as a judge. Who do you think got these guys down out of the tree?â
Even though I was glad to see he wasnât hungover, I wasnât happy with him either. âChase McGregor! You are not supposed to be here. You canât see the bride before the ceremony!â
Getting a plate, he said, âI texted Glory to tell her I was coming for breakfast.
