CHAPTER 18

Sabine

The male fae drops to his knees and cradles my face. I stare up at Darian, drinking in the concern etched into every bit of his features and the way his hands tremble as they touch me.

“What did I say about foolish people needing protection?” he rasps.

I scrunch my face. “I believe that’s what I said.”

“You may have said it, but the sentiment applies to you. More often than I’d appreciate.” He looks at Dessielle and his gaze hardens. As does his voice. “I want to see it.”

She removes her blood-covered hands and sets them in her lap, the red immediately smearing on the fabric of her pink dress. Her gaze flicks to me, and I catch a flash of guilt as it streaks through. “It could be fatal if the blood loss is severe, my lord.”

Darian’s hand shoots out to grab her wrist, encircling her rose gold bracelet. Dessielle bites back a cry of alarm, and I frown at him. If I wasn’t so weak, I’d give him a piece of my mind for treating my friend that way.

Actually, I still might. I just need to catch my breath first.

“You’re a healer,” the prince says, shaking her, “so fucking heal the faeling and stop the bleeding.”

Dessielle whimpers. “I’ll try.”

“You’ll do more than try.” Darian takes her other wrist and presses both of her hands to my side. “Sabine’s fate is now intertwined with yours. If she dies, you die. Am I clear?”

My friend blinks away tears, and her mouth thins. “As you wish.”

Darian releases the female but continues to hover over her. Dessielle closes her eyes, and her lips move, the words silent and meant for the gods alone. My eyelids flutter shut, only for a harsh grip on my chin to have them fluttering open.

“You will not sleep,” he says to me, his voice a growl. “Look at me and nowhere else. That’s it. Stay with me.”

I groan at the warmth that invades my wound. The heat travels from my side and spreads like fire, sizzling through every part of my body. I squeeze my eyes shut when the pain engulfs me.

“Holy fuck,” I grit out. “Dessielle, are you healing me or trying to expedite my death?”

A sound that’s both a sob and a giggle sweeps past my ears. “I’m sorry, Sabine.”

“If you’re cursing, then you’re still with me,” Darian says. “Keep talking.”

I open one eye, squinting up at him. “Don’t tempt me. I have a mouth fouler than a prostitute’s cun—”

“For the love of the gods,” Dessielle says on a near screech.

Darian releases a chuckle, and the creases around his mouth and eyes lessen. “Focus, healer.”

“Her name is Dessielle,” I snap. “She’s my friend, and now my hero.”

The prince dips his head by way of apology, and I grin up at him. My smile turns into a grimace when the healer’s magic pulses underneath my skin, scorching me once more.

“How much longer?” Darian asks.

He strokes my cheek as if to soothe me. Or himself. His concern for my welfare erases some of the hurt he inflicted by ignoring me again this morning.
