Chapter Sixteen

“What are you going to do?”

John looked over at Flynn, who was scrubbing his dirt-encrusted hands at the kitchen sink. It was his busiest time, he’d told him. Spring, when everything was coming to life.

And realizing it’s time to go crazy.

John remembered his friend’s words, spoken wryly, but with a gleam of anticipation in his eyes. Not the fire he’d seen when they were on a mission, but a quieter, happier sort of shine. Bringing life instead of taking it. He supposed that was what had drawn Flynn to it. He’d been through such hell, it had to be an easing of it to coax new life out of the earth.

Aren’t you waxing philosophic....

He knew it was to keep himself from thinking about Jenny. The week since he’d seen her had seemed an eternity, and he’d spent it doing little more than reading and running, in between crashing on Flynn’s couch. They were the only two escapes he’d found, and the running only worked if he kept himself on the edge of hitting the wall. And an endless span of the same stretched out before him, a prospect so grim he couldn’t deal with it yet. He was a fool; he’d let himself get his hopes up when all along he’d known better. Jenny might understand, might even forgive him, but there was no picking up where they’d left off, not after he’d hurt her so badly.

He watched Flynn for a moment longer before he asked, “Did you always know? That you had this...green thumb?”

Flynn shrugged as he rinsed his hands, then reached for the towel on the sink. “I always knew I liked it. Took me a while to get past caring what other people—especially other guys—thought about it. Growing food they got. Flowers, not so much.”

John let out a muffled snort. “I’d like to see somebody make a snide remark now.”

“Most don’t, usually, funnily enough.”

“They probably sense you could take them out without a blink.”

“I hope not,” Flynn said quietly.

John studied the man who was his brother in all but the blood sense. “You’ve truly put it behind you, haven’t you?” he said softly.

“As much as is possible, I hope.” He turned around, neatly folding and putting down the towel. Leaned back against the counter. “Especially with my daily reminder.”

It took John a moment to realize he meant his face; he rarely even thought about it anymore when he saw him, except to wish, as he always did, that he’d gotten there that split second sooner.

“Stop,” Flynn said. John blinked. “It was not your fault. If anything, it was mine. I should have realized what Hamdi was going to pull. He was never going to go quietly.”

It played back in his head then, the dirty, cringing terrorist in the back of the Zodiac suddenly erupting into motion, Flynn jumping to stop him, and both of them going over the stern. Hamdi had been killed instantly, but John would have let him die anyway, without a qualm; in fact, he had the wistful hope sharks frequented the area—after he got Flynn out of the water.
