CHAPTER 6

Sam peered out at the night sky, disappointment clouding her every thought.

“Penny for them?” Bob said from behind her.

He was sitting up in his bed, still wearing the same clothes. His planned trip home had been unavoidably postponed due to them getting involved in the search for Anita Davila.

“Where can she be, Bob? And what the fuck is going on here?”

“God, if only we knew the answers to both of those not-so-simple questions, I think we’d be millionaires, sunning ourselves on a couple of swanky yachts, island hopping in the Caribbean.”

She smiled and walked back to her single bed. “It would be lovely to dream of getting away from all these blasted serial killers we seem to be chasing day in, day out. Why the heck is the world so angry right now?”

“I’m with you on that. Abigail had to call her friend the other day to get herself out of a sticky situation.”

“Oh, what was that all about?”

“A car suddenly stopped in front of her and turned right, failed to use the indicator. Abigail had to brake sharply, fearing she might go into the back of this damned Volvo. She blasted her horn and then drove home, or tried to.”

Sam frowned. “Why? What happened?”

“She got five hundred yards up the road and then looked in her rear-view mirror to see this sodding Volvo behind her, flashing its lights and beeping its horn at her.”

“Never. What the fuck is wrong with people? She didn’t stop, did she?”

“Not likely. Anyway, she drove around the roundabout, near the dual track, and this car started to move out behind her, as if going to overtake her. Her heart in her mouth, she floored the accelerator and left the car behind. I’ve been giving her lessons about using evasive tactics when needed.”

“I bet you have. So, did the driver turn around?” Sam wriggled forward to the edge of the bed as he continued to tell her his heart-pumping tale.

“Did they heck. Unfortunately, Abigail got snarled up in the traffic ahead of her. It slowed her down, allowing the driver to get on her tail again, beeping the horn, flashing the lights.”

“Jesus, that’s insane. I bet there wasn’t a copper around either, not when she really needed one. That’s harassment or road rage. Does she have a dashcam in the car?”

“Not at the time. I’ve since nipped into Halfords to purchase one, which I had planned to set up for her this weekend. Anyway, Abigail tried to lose the driver several times. On that stretch of the road there’s no way she could have overtaken the car in front, otherwise she would have done. The driver was relentless. She tried ringing me, but I think we were busy and I had put the phone on silent, so I wasn’t aware she’d rung until I checked my messages that night. I was seething on her behalf.”

“I bet. I don’t suppose she had a chance to take down the car’s registration, did she?”

“No, it was too close for her to see.
