Evie’s foul mood had come back full-force. On her third whiskey of the night, she was attempting to create a profile on the Axl app. All of her photos were either of landscapes, her dog or of her with Connie. She didn’t have a single photo to post that would make any woman within fifty miles want to sleep with her tonight.

Meanwhile, Annette and Kris were out on the back porch of the bar, swapping spit. Evie glared in the direction of the door and wondered if she should interrupt them to ask them to take her picture for the app.

No, Kris would say this is a bad idea… She sulked, realizing that her glass was empty yet again. She slinked over to the crowded bar and tried to catch the eye of the slender young woman juggling half a dozen drink orders behind it.

But Evie was interrupted in her attempts by an aggressive elbow that jarred her rocks glass from her hand, sending it shooting across the bar.

“Hey!” Evie whipped her head around to see a tall blonde in a tight t-shirt. The woman had the remains of a mid-twenty-something’s version of “going out” makeup. There was the faintest hint of a swipe of sparkling purple eyeshadow above her heavily mascaraed eyelashes. The color briefly reminded her of Diana’s purple hair and lipstick, and a small, angry knot started to form in her stomach.

“Fuck I am so, so sorry!” The younger woman fumbled for the glass but almost knocked it off the bar completely. The bartender swooped in just in time to grab the glass and deftly right it.

“What will you have?” The slim woman was clearly eyeing both of them, trying to figure out which one was responsible for the downed glass, and whether either had been overserved. Evie was about to protest her scrutinizing glance when the purple eyeshadowed woman spoke up.

“I’ll have a whiskey and ginger ale and whatever she’s having.” Eyeshadow nodded to Evie, grinning a bit too widely in what seemed to be a ham-handed attempt at flirting.

Evie reflexively looked down to make sure that her shirt was properly buttoned and unstained. She was in luck. A quick swipe of her hand over her hair also indicated that her hair was neatly swept back in its standard ponytail. She turned around to face Eyeshadow.

Fuck that stupid app. Evie was at Ladies’ week in Provincetown. No place on earth had a higher density of women who were willing, eager even, to sleep with a young-ish, attractive female lawyer. If she was going to get laid, Evie was going to get laid the old fashioned way.
