Fourteen

After a shower together, they dressed and went in search of food. Daylight faded and the wind had picked up, gusting under a navy sky. They found a restaurant near the hotel and ordered dinner and wine, followed by several espressos.

It was good to do normal things, to be in each other’s presence without the hindrance of time zones and video calls. Belle could hold Andre’s hand, lean in to kiss him whenever she liked and sip espressos with the explicit intent that they would be awake all night. And there was no mention of Callum, for which Belle was grateful. For the past four days, he’d been all she could think about—who was he, where was he, how would he receive the news that she was his? Her head ached with the constant questions.

And had it only been four days? She felt like she’d been in Scotland for weeks, chasing Callum’s shadow, following a trail of crumbs that promised so much, only to peter out within sight of her goal. So consuming was her quest to find him that it was a relief to let him go for a while and focus her energy on the beautiful man in front of her. As she drank her third espresso, her ankles entwined around Andre’s under the table, she thought of Riley, hoping she’d found comfort too, in the arms of her bartender. Paris had thrown them so far off course that she sometimes wondered if either of them would ever make it back.

Well after midnight, with the caffeine having done its intended work, they walked down to the beach and slipped off their shoes, feeling the cold sand between their toes, before taking the winding path through Castle Green back to the hotel. Once inside, it took Andre seconds to remove her clothes and have her back under the covers, as the black night inched towards a half-hearted dawn then eventually, a frosty sunrise. All time was lost in a blur of white sheets and entwined limbs. If there was ever a time to breathe Andre in, to saturate her soul with his, it was now, for their days were numbered again.

Being with him, lying close to him, threw her back to a time in Italy when they’d enjoyed slow walks through the piazza and sat side by side at the staff dinners, the air charged with their attraction, the same powerful chemistry that had sustained them so far. It allowed Belle to cling to the hope that maybe they could do this. That stolen moments and chance encounters might be enough to see them through if they both held on.

The next morning, after only a few hours of sleep, they rose. Coffee was the order of the day, and they drank several cups over bacon and pancakes at a café nearby. Belle’s thighs were pleasantly tender, her body aching in places that still bore the memory of Andre’s hands. She was certain nothing could deflate the bubble she’d cocooned herself in until he brought up the subject of Fort William.
