Ember settled into the goo of her piloting chamber as the Blue Heron sank in the sky. It would take a few minutes for the airship to reach the ground from this height, so she had some time to spend in glorious silence, to clear her mind as she always did before these kinds of missions.

Yet, Locke’s request nagged at her.

She knew he meant well, and his reasons were valid. She’d had to clear her mind more since Ray arrived than she usually did before a job.

But Locke couldn’t possibly understand the depth to which Vasori stubbornness went, not really. Not like she did. Hells, one of the reasons why she’d left Vasor was because she couldn’t understand the appeal of living in a society where everyone was constricted, and not only that, but actively fought to maintain that constriction. She understood that Vasor associated its success with that level of dedication and consistency, but surely it was possible for a society to thrive without making all of its members miserable, right?

Still, she had time, and though she knew Ray wouldn’t change his mind, she figured she may as well make the attempt, if only so she could say she tried.

She linked with Ghostly Parable.

“Ray? Locke told me I should talk to you,” she said. “I don’t see what good it’ll do, but—”

“Actually, Locke told me I should speak to you, too,” Ray replied through her comm, then paused as if thinking. “You know I think you should come back to Vasor, but … he told me what you did. How you were adamant about coming here to find mother. Despite knowing how you’d be received.”

Ember paused. Well, that was a surprise. But she still felt petulant about it.

“And?” she said.

Ray continued. “I … wanted to apologize. For being the one to receive you that way. I may not agree with your decision to leave, but I appreciate that you came back, and … if your performance in yesterday’s fight is indicative of your skill, I think you may have made a good choice. To become a titan mage. Which is to say, I’m glad to have you on my side.”

“Thanks, Ray,” Ember replied. “That means a lot.”

“Though, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that you could be an equally adept mage for the Index.”

“Don’t push it,” Ember retorted.

“I’m kidding,” Ray replied, with an unexpected amount of levity. “But also, force of habit. I won’t ask again. Plus, if you fight that well when distracted by me, I can only imagine how you fight when you’re at your best.”

Ember felt the easy bump of the Blue Heron landing, and allowed herself a small, surprised smile at the compliment. It had likely taken no small effort for him to make it, given his obvious attitude toward her leaving.

In comparison to the vehemence of that attitude, it still wasn’t much—but it was a valuable something, and she’d take it.

“I fight like someone who knows she has to fight,” she replied, and then stepped out of her hangar bay toward the ruin.
