HOW THE EMPEROR HAD HIS DAUGHTER TAKE THE LETTER TO TIRANT

Having read the letter and beheld his men’s dismay, the emperor wondered whether to give it to Tirant or wait till he was better. After pondering the matter for three days, he decided to have Carmesina deliver it and ask the captain to return to his camp as soon as possible.

Upon entering Tirant’s chamber, the princess approached his bed and sweetly cried: “Oh flower of chivalry, hear your starving soldiers’ cries: ‘Where is that brave knight who won such honor? Where is that valiant winner of battles? All hope is lost if that conqueror does not come!’ They have sent this letter, addressed ‘to the best of all knights,’ and if that is not you, who could it be?”

Once Tirant had read the letter and showed it to the empress, Carmesina said: “If you are willing, noble captain, to depart for those cruel battlefields, your deeds will live on in glorious memory, for your mere presence will so terrify the Turks that they will fear to oppose you. Thus you will bravely complete your mission and do us all a great service, but if you will not go for love, do so out of courage and virtue.”

Tirant replied: “Your Highness need not plead, as the emperor’s wishes are my commands. You know how much I long to serve you even if it means my certain death, and you may tell your parents that all my life I shall be their servant.”

And seizing her hands, half against her will, he covered them with kisses.

Then the empress went to one end of the room with a psalter and started praying, while her daughter remained with Stephanie, the Easygoing Widow, Pleasure-of-my-life, and Tirant, who kept clasping his lady’s hands and kissing them until at last she protested:
