Chapter 5

Brie awoke with a jerk. She blinked, taking in the foreign lights, the furniture, and finally the man holding her in his arms. Darren. A soft smile tugged at her lips. He’d been a pleasure she’d never expected from the human world.

And as much as she wished she could stay here and pretend this could be her life, it was not. She had a mission and an entire race depending on her. If she gave up her responsibility, she would never be able to wash the blood from her hands. She barely knew this man anyway. Better to walk away now before life got any more complicated than it already was.

She carefully extricated herself from his embrace, and stood up on wobbly legs. She stretched her hands over her head and tipped her shoulders side to side, sore in the best kind of way. She’d had lovers in her world, experienced Elven males who prided themselves on their ability to pleasure females. As a younger woman, she’d enjoyed their pleasures, but over the years she had lost interest. She could satisfy herself in less time and without any emotional attachments.

Darren sighed in his sleep, drawing her attention to his face. His features were more masculine than the elves back home, hair shadowing his jawline, and his thick brows framing dark brown expressive eyes. Eyes that had looked at her like she was the only thing in the world that mattered to him.

No one had ever looked at her like that before, and she had lived much longer than a human lifetime.

And the sex had been…new. Having a partner who was overcome with desire for her was refreshing. Pleasuring females was something males in her race took pride in, almost to the level of conceit. Eventually, she wanted nothing more than to make them lose their precious control. Sex became another battlefield to prove themselves, another conquest.

But last night had been none of that. Last night…they’d needed each other. She’d trusted him.

And that was terrifying.

With that thought, she was instantly fully clothed. Using her magic, she’d conjured plain denim pants and a white t-shirt like the clothe she’d seen women wearing yesterday at the promenade. Her belt with her sword hung from her waist. She tied the sheath around her thigh to hold it close to her leg. She tipped her head, studying it, hoping she’d be able to pass as human.

Her mother was a rare halfling, half human and half elf. She’d spent some of her childhood in this world and filled Brie’s head with stories of the mundane human world.

None of them included magic.

So why was Brie’s magic returning to her here?

She wasn’t sure, but the sooner she found the wisher and brought their blood back to the winter realm, the sooner the magic would return for everyone. Maybe it would be followed by the laughter of children. Her vision blurred at the thought. She hadn’t heard the cries of an elven baby in a hundred years.
