CHAPTER TWELVE

Instead of calling for the next item he needed, Boyd pushed to his feet and took a long moment for a tall, quivering, languid stretch of his entire body, arms raised high above his head before he doubled over to press his fingertips onto the hardwood floor and bounce at the hips a few times.

“Maybe we should’ve done a few warm-up exercises before we got started, Sergeant,” Stryker observed.

Robbins scoffed. “Or I could whip your ass right now. That’d probably get my heart rate up by a few beats per minute.”

Their team leader ignored them as he straightened and twisted his torso from side to side, stretched out his ribcage, worked out the kinks in his neck, and finally nodded. “Okay. This is the part where we put that gooey shit into action and see how this goes.”

He stepped forward and stooped to grab the short, dented, halfway twisted ladle that looked like Gonzalez had rocked out and mistaken it for a stress ball before twisting it between his hands in anxious anticipation. The ladle’s handle wasn’t its function, which Emily supposed was why someone had tossed it into the landfill in the first place. Then Boyd and Nelson retrieved it as something they would need.

With the handle in one hand and his opposite palm open to receive repeated smacks of the bottom, Boyd stared at their quivering mixture in the pewter bowl. It had taken on a pea soup color, rippling with the occasional metallic silver sheen they couldn’t have explained even if they’d tried. “Now for the moment of truth, I guess. Somebody get Nelson in here. I want everyone in on this when we start.”

“Nelson!” Stryker bellowed, making everyone else jump. “Sergeant says get your ass in here!”

It hadn’t been what their team leader meant, but it got the job done.

Nelson gruffly swept aside the tarp and poked his head through the opening. “What?” he snapped.

Robbins explained, “We’re ready to go, man, and Sergeant Boyd wants everybody in on this.”

Emily looked at each of them with an amused frown. There was no way Nelson couldn’t have heard Boyd before being screamed for by Stryker. Still, the medic played the part of the clueless but pissed off and insulted team member by acting like he’d had no idea. It almost looked like he was waiting for Boyd’s explicit request for him to rejoin them, but it didn’t come.

Finally, after several moments of Boyd repeatedly smacking the ladle into his hand and staring at their spell soup while the rest of the team expectantly gazed at Nelson, waiting for him to join them, the medic rolled his eyes. With a huff of frustration, he practically ripped through the tarp before stomping toward them. On his way, he paused for a split second as he passed Officer Akbas and shot the bloated corpse one of the most hateful and scathing glares Emily had seen in a long time, among the Prodigal Suns and elsewhere.

Yeah, I’d probably resent a decomposing body just as much if everyone around me thought it smelled better than I did.
