Chapter Fourteen

We ended up in Angelo’s room, next door to Trent’s new one.

“The detective has him sequestered,” my husband’s partner said.

“Angelo.” I confronted him, not wanting any secrets between us and remembering what I’d seen the night before, “why were you talking to the victim in the lobby?” I’d assumed Angelo was confronting Gerald about stopping the wedding, but could there have been more to it?

He hesitated, frowning, something dark crossing his face before he lightened up again and nodded. “I went after him,” he said. “Of course, I did. Someone had to.” Fair enough. “The jerk spilled his drink on my tux, got the sleeve all wet, laughed about it.” He shrugged then. “It took everything I had not to beat the crap out of him.”

Phew, okay. “So, if I looked at your shirt from last night,” I said, recalling the second point that had me nervous, “it would be stained with champagne?”

Angelo stared at me for a long time while Cherise prodded me.

“Seph, Angelo had no reason to kill Gerald,” she said.

“I know that,” I told her. “But we have to eliminate one another.” They both nodded immediately. “Due diligence in this case, if only for Trent and Melanie. There was a definite stain from the fabric being wet, but a single sniff identified the source as alcoholic in nature, though I did catch a faint whiff of chlorine. Which, I realized as my suspicious mind relented, could be attributed to bleach at the cleaners.

“Okay,” I said, turning to Cherise this time as she stared me down like a perfectly carved statue of a goddess of war ready to do battle in her jeans and short jacket. “You are Trent’s best friend,” I said. “Your room was right down the hall, and you had easy access if you decided to ask him for his key.”

She nodded. “Except my husband and kid can tell you I never left the suite after we all left around 6:30,” she said. “We had a quiet dinner, like I know you did because I saw the delivery at the same time mine arrived, then retired to watch movies and try to forget the mess. I fell asleep and only came out when I heard voices in the hallway.”

That was a relief. Not that I believed it of her, but I had to ask.

Which meant they now faced me down with serious expressions while I inhaled and slowly exhaled before lifting my chin.

“I found the body,” I said, “and I was in the room with no good reason to be there.” Neither of them said a word, letting me go on. I
