Chapter Eight
I keep one eye out for Mother as I reenter the ballroom. I'm sure I have an angry lecture coming my way sooner rather than later, but I want to avoid it for as long as possible. Hopefully, she's doing what she normally does at this time and is entertaining whoever it is who she wants to impress the most.
"Kayra," Demi calls, waving to me from a few feet away where she's talking to a woman I don't know. She's about our age, it's a surprise she doesn't attend Sabre Woods and I don't know her already.
I make my way over and plaster a smile on my face. I know I don't have to fake things for Demi, but I do for everyone else's benefit. No one wants to see me looking unsure of myself. It's a good way to end up losing all the support I've already managed to gain in regards to being the Heir. I can't waste any of that. In fact, I need more of it, and I'm not foolish enough to think this isn't an opportunity for me to gain some.
"How is everything in here?" I ask my friend. "You look stunning, by the way. An excellent choice."
The dress she chose from my wardrobe is a soft sunset orange. It's not something that looks good on me, but with Demi's darker complexion, it's beautiful. I never got a chance to see what she picked before being pulled aside to get myself ready.
"Thank you. Everything seems to be fine. Nothing to report from where I've been standing," Demi says brightly. "Have you met Shelly?" She indicates to the woman next to her.
"No, I haven't had the pleasure. It's lovely to meet you," I say with a polite nod.
"Thank you. I'm here with my dad, he's being honoured today."
I raise an eyebrow. "You're Richard Forrest's daughter?"
"I am." Pride fills the girl's eyes.
"I was actually hoping to talk to him today," I admit. Maybe this isn't how I intended to come into contact with Mr Forrest, but I'll take the advantages where I can get them.
"Oh."
"You seem surprised," I say.
"I wouldn't have thought the Shifter Heir had much to say to someone who wants to abolish the monarchy," she admits.
"That's precisely what I want to talk to him about." My pulse races even as I admit it. I imagine Mother would consider what I'm doing akin to treason. Or at the very least going contrary to her own plans.
But something needs to be done, and giving the man an empty title isn't going to stop Forrests's movement from gaining traction. People want change. That's the only way of stopping things from exploding and depriving me of a job in the future. Though I'll be able to find another one, I suppose. Maybe even a job that will let me help people still. Though not as many people as I can help as the Shifter Queen.
Perhaps I'm deluded in thinking that. I could be wrong. Maybe the monarchy should be abolished.
