Herb glanced at the others gathered around him as he stood in the center of the living room.
“I think all of us have had our interrogations now, haven’t we?”
Suzie tensed up at the mention of interrogation. She was sure that Jason had been polite, but he could get quite intense, especially if he thought he was on to something. Had he been a bit too aggressive with Herb?
“What’s this all about, Herb?” Bert sat forward in his chair and stared at Herb from beneath bushy, gray eyebrows. “Are you going to get to the point?”
“I just want to be sure that everyone is listening.” He looked pointedly in Suzie’s direction, then Mary’s, before he continued. “I think we should leave.” Herb looked straight at Callie. “There’s no reason to stay here. Someone was murdered, just down the beach from here.” He shook his head. “How can any of us feel secure enough to sleep here?”
“Herb, murders happen everywhere. Yes, it’s terrible, but that’s no reason for us to just run off. I want to see that Little Furn and get a photo of it, and if I give up my chance now, I will always regret it.” Callie glanced over at Suzie and Mary. “It’s not as if it was just some random killer, right? Someone was after Ken specifically. We’re not in any danger.”
“The police do not believe it was random, no. But until they know for certain who did it, there is some degree of danger to consider. I don’t want to dismiss your concerns, but we keep Dune House secure, especially at night, and since Jason is here quite frequently, the police presence will help scare off anyone with bad intentions.” Suzie clasped her hands in front of her.
“Except it didn’t scare the killer off, did it? Just a few steps down from the beach Ken was murdered. I don’t think the killer was worried about being caught.” Herb frowned.
“Maybe he wasn’t.” Sebastian spoke up, with Tammy’s hand clasped in his own. “Maybe he had a bone to pick with that arrogant jerk. I mean really, are any of us surprised that Ken was killed?” He glanced around at his friends. “He had our blood boiling, didn’t he? I’m sure we’re not the first ones that he’s picked fights with.”
“Sebastian, that’s a little harsh.” Tammy frowned as she pulled her hand away from his. “I barely knew the guy, but I’m sure he didn’t deserve to die.”
“I’m not saying that he did.” He balled his hands into fists. “I’m just saying that I can see how it would happen. He wasn’t a friendly person, and seemed to think he was in charge. If you cross the wrong person with that kind of attitude, you never know what will happen.”
“Great, I hope you told the cop that, so that he’ll come back here and slap cuffs on you, Seb!” Herb rolled his eyes. “Why don’t you just paint a target on your back?”
“Keep quiet, Herb.” Sebastian stood up from the couch and glared at him.
