Once we got in the car, Pepper embarked on an intensive grooming session.

“I’m trying to rid my fur of all the unpleasantness,” he told me.

We decided to pursue more information by visiting Cameron Hoffman, Calvin’s uncle, the man in charge of the boardwalk shops.

His office was only a few blocks from the boardwalk. It was a friendly place with beach decor, anchors, rope, seashells, and a mermaid painted on the wall, waving at you from the ocean. The receptionist greeted us with a smile, and when we asked to see Cameron, he came out to welcome us, a handsome man with a tan wearing a high-end Hawaiian shirt and khakis. He managed to look both stylish and approachable.

“Call me Cam,” he said, extending his hand. He had a firm handshake, indicating that this was not a mere formality and that he was pleased to make our acquaintance.

We offered our condolences. We told him we were writing an article on Carl. We wondered if he could share his thoughts on his brother.

His face turned serious.

“It’s a great loss,” he said. “These last few years have been precious to me. I felt like I was getting to know Carl.”

“You weren’t close when you were young?” Owen asked.

“My brother,” Cam said, “was an extremely focused individual. He had known what he wanted since he was very young.”

“What was that?” Owen said, and we saw Cam’s big smile again.

“King of the Boardwalk,” he said. “That was his destiny. He made that very clear to me. So I went on my way. I worked in real estate out west, made a bundle, and gave a lot of it to my ex-wife, but when Carl called and said he needed help, I was happy to come home and share the crown.”

“How do you like working in Harmony Beach?”

His eyes twinkled. “I love it. Of course, at first I tried not to make any waves.” He looked at us to see whether we caught the pun and then continued. “I tried to keep it calm and steady during the transition. But lately, Calvin’s been stepping up, and we’ve been talking about some changes, a new vision for the boardwalk.” He beamed. “Calvin is a lot like his father; they are both determined and stubborn. But the love is there, and Calvin is the glue. He wanted us to join forces. At first, his dad wasn’t too keen on our ideas, but he came around. I mean, it’s all pretty obvious when you think about it. Things get out of date. Do people really want corn dogs anymore? Is anyone interested in purchasing a wooden sign with a corny saying? Do our visitors want to visit that dusty old place we call the Historical Museum? No, Calvin called for a broad re-evaluation of what we offered on the boardwalk, and I am fully behind that.”

“We heard Calvin talked to Nicole about moving up on the boardwalk,” I said.

“We would love to have her,” Cam said. “That food would be a significant upgrade.
