Chapter Twelve

Rafael could only stare at Lucas in shock. He was cousins with the President.

“When were you going to tell me about this?” he rasped out. “Do you have any idea what this could mean for my people? For shifters in general?”

Lucas sat down beside Rafael who had fallen onto the bed in his shocked state. He reached out and grabbed one of his hands. “There is something that you need to know. Trevor is already aware of shifters. He was read into their existence when he became President. I never told him anything that surprised him.”

Unable to wrap his mind around what Lucas just told him, Rafael could only stare at him in stunned surprise. “Holy shit, he was told about shifters. He knows of our existence. You talk about me keeping secrets, then you drop this on me!”

“Yup, but in all fairness, this isn’t my secret. This is my cousin who has a job, granted it’s a pretty important one, but it’s still his job, not mine. I don’t have anything to do with what he does. I only called him out of courtesy, since I knew that we were going to possibly be getting into some trouble and that it involved humans and shifters. Do we really need the average Joe finding out about shifters? As the saying goes, a person is usually smart, people are dumb. After thinking about it, as much as I would love to be able to use the threat of going public, we really shouldn’t.”

The casual way that Lucas said that should have freaked him out more, but the way that he was so calm was helping to settle him down. Thinking about what he’d said, Rafael slowly began to realize that Lucas was making sense. By speaking to his cousin, he was laying the groundwork to keeping everyone safer.

“What did you find out?”

“That because he knew of shifters, the order to attack didn’t come from his office, and he never gave the approval for this. He never would have. He knew nothing about this. He’s offered his help to us to put an end to it and to help keep your family in control.”

“Damn, he really didn’t do this?” Rafael could only look at his mate in shock, only coming to understand the implications of this. “If I’m understanding what you’re saying, this means that someone else is doing this, and that means that whoever it is, they’re not going to go easily. We’re probably going to have a fight on our hands.”

“Most likely.” Lucas got up and began to pace around the room. “I know you have that chat where you can contact the palace staff, but do you think you can get any information from them? We need some details so we can plan an attack, and I want to have our teams here to set up something. I’m going to have my team here tomorrow. When will your team get here?”

“Diego and his crew said they can’t get here until the day after.
