a few minutes later, when they emerged from the store into the summer evening, the sun sat round and glowing just above the horizon. Against it were silhouetted old men and boys who sat fishing from the canal bank, while their motionless poles pointed to the sky like thin fingers. The earlier breeze had stilled and the warm air held the scent of roses. Altogether a perfect summer evening, Glynis thought with a twinge of nostalgia; she and Cullen had spent many such evenings walking together as they did now. But that was before. Before Jacques and before Fleur. She shouldn't think about it.

"Cullen, I received an interesting letter from my uncle in San Francisco." She told him about the rumors concerning Valerian Voss.

"Now imagine that," Cullen said. "That is interesting. Especially since I've found out from several former bank employees that Voss and Tom Bingham began having some violent arguments about a month before the bank failed. Wonder if Bingham found out Voss was up to some—how did your uncle put it?—shady business!"

"But he said it was only rumor, Cullen."

"Good enough for me to do some thorough checking on Voss. Find out what he was doing in Utica, for instance."

Glynis nodded. A bank vice-president would certainly have the opportunity to change bad money for good. To say nothing of secretly holding onto plates supposed to be turned into the state banking commission and destroyed. She knew Cullen was thinking the same thing.

"By the way," she asked as they neared the firehouse, "how is Liam Cleary working out?"

Cullen sighed long and loud. "Answer enough?"

"Is it that he's too sensitive?"

"Oh, he's sensitive, all right. I can't see him in this job much longer if he continues to vomit every time there's a tough situation. And then, to further distract him, his sister has troubles."

Glynis was immediately wary. She thought Liam had said Cullen didn't know about Fiona. "What troubles?" she asked.

"The poor kid doesn't know I'm aware of it," Cullen explained, "but his sister's gone and married a bad one. Had to get married, is my understanding. Husband uses her for a punching bag. Matter of fact, right now she's at Neva's refuge. Again."

"Does her married name happen to be Roarke? If it is, I saw her there some time ago."

"Well, she's there again. Yes, she's Kerry Roarke's wife. This time Roarke gave her a black eye, split lip, and likely a broken rib. Reason I got involved was a neighbor's kid came flying into the office, saying the man next door was killing his wife." Cullen shook his head.

As they rounded the firehouse and walked toward the office in the back, Glynis decided she would talk to Morwenna the next morning.

When Cullen pulled open the door, Liam Cleary didn't look up. He didn't move. He was slumped over the desk, his head on his arms, snoring softly.

"That's what I like to see," Cullen said, "an alert, ever vigilant deputy. Keeping the jail secure!" He went over and shook Liam's shoulder, not gently.
