Chapter Six
RILEY’S SEARCH turned up a letter from Flynn’s mother, and an address in a little village just outside Bristol. Exhausted and worried as he was, Mitch turned the car around and was back on the road within minutes of arriving home. Seeing how tired Mitch was, Riley offered to drive, and Mitch refused. Driving tired was better than driving while over-emotional, and Riley was upset enough to put them in a ditch. The longer they went without hearing from Flynn, the worse Riley seemed to become.
He didn’t say as much to his partner, but privately, Mitch worried Flynn might have left them for good. What if Flynn never came back? It had been obvious for a while that Riley was in love with the kid, and Mitch thought, if he was honest, that he probably was too. The three of them just felt right. He and Riley were good together and always had been. But he, Riley, and Flynn? That was something special. If anything, it made Mitch and Riley’s relationship stronger.
Until Flynn’s disappearing act, Mitch had thought he loved them too, but if that was true, why had he run from them? Flynn had always been a little unstable, his behavior unpredictable, but this was on a whole different level.
And what if they got to Flynn’s mother’s house and he wasn’t there either? What did they do then? How were they supposed to find him if he didn’t want to be found?
Thankfully, Mitch got them there without incident. He parked outside the house and they sat for a moment, staring up at the brightly lit windows.
“It’s late,” Riley said, yawning. “What if she doesn’t let us in?”
“We’ll tell her we’re Flynn’s friends and we’re worried about him. Chances are he hasn’t told her about us.”
“You think he’s ashamed?” Riley asked, as though it was not something he had considered.
Mitch shrugged. “Have you told your parents?”
“That I’m fucking two guys at the same time? No, of course not. But I’m not ashamed of what we do, Mitch. The three of us belong together, you know we do. I just don’t think it’s anyone else’s business.”
“Well then, let’s go and get him.”
There could be no mistaking the identity of the woman who answered the door to Mitch’s knock. Flynn’s mother was as diminutive in stature as her son and had the same pale blonde hair and brilliant blue eyes. Unlike her son, however, she did not look like someone who needed protecting. She glared at the strangers on her doorstep, and Mitch was prepared to bet she could cut him down with a sharp look if she chose to do so.
“Mitch and Riley, I assume.” She eyed them up and down, seeming decidedly unimpressed by what she saw. “So, which one of you is sleeping with my son?”
“I am,” Riley said quickly. Mitch thought it was a wise move. Better the handsome boy-next-door than the man mountain who looked as though he could snap Flynn like a twig. “And I’d really like to talk to him, if that’s okay, ma’am.
