Tess and Jerome watched as Heath donned a crime scene gown and gloves and was clipped into the contraption that would lower him into the bottom of the lift shaft. They had found a maintenance hatch on the staff level in the basement and the hotel maintenance crew had offered them the use of their winch and rope, used if there were ever any problems with the lift. Tess peered over the side into the darkness below and looked back at Heath.

‘You okay with this?’ she asked. ‘We can wait for the floodlights to arrive.’

‘It’s fine,’ he assured her, clicking his torch on and off to demonstrate. ‘Lower me in.’

As Heath was dropped into the shaft, Tess watched the beam of his flashlight slide down the wall and disappear, swallowed in darkness. She looked at Jerome. ‘How many horror films have you seen that start like this?’ she asked.

‘I think it needs to have thunder and lightning to qualify,’ he replied. ‘Plus, he’s not a big-breasted blonde teenager. Should be fine.’

‘Glad you feel that way,’ Tess said. ‘Because if he doesn’t come out, you’re going in after him.’

Jerome made a noise that conveyed a loud ‘Hell, no.’ He looked at her, eyebrows raised. ‘Good-looking Black dude like me? You must be crazy.’

‘Guv?’ Heath’s voice came up from inside the shaft and Tess’s heart began to thump. ‘I’ve got it. I’ve got the knife.’
