Chapter 18
When wealth to virtuous hands is given
It blesses like the dews of heav’n
Like heaven it hears the orphan’s cries
And wipes the tears from widow’s eyes.
—Sarah Kurtz, born in 1795 in Georgetown, District of Columbia, stitched this sampler when she was nine years old. She included three block alphabets and one script alphabet as well as trees, crowns, flowers, and birds. Sarah married Thomas Orme in 1816 and they had three children.
“Linc, will you talk with Sergeant Lambert and Detective Trask now?” said Cos, coming up to Linc and me. She pushed a strand of brown hair off her face. She looked pale, and was holding a glass of juice. “I wanted a few more minutes before I talked with them, so I told them I’d be interviewed after you.”
“No problem,” Linc answered. “Is everything all right?”
“Everything’s fine,” she assured him.
He gave her a fast hug and kissed her cheek.
Linc headed for the solarium, and Cos took a deep drink of her orange juice.
“You and Linc have become good friends,” I said. “Last spring when we talked I hadn’t realized you had such a close relationship.”
“We didn’t know each other except to say ‘hello’ until late last winter,” she admitted. “When he was home from college on his winter break he came down to the bookstore, and we ended up going to the Harbor Haunts for cocoa and talking for a couple of hours.”
“Sounds like a good beginning,” I said. I was ten years older than Cos, and beyond the stage of sharing cocoa with Patrick, but I understood her joy. I couldn’t help being happy for her. “Linc says you were the one who helped him get the job on Harbor Heartbreak.”
“Yes. It all happened so suddenly, and I wasn’t sure he’d be interested. But the pay is good, and working together has given us a chance to get to know each other even better.”
“He said Marv Mason was spending a lot of time with you,” I added. “It must feel strange to have him gone.”
Cos hesitated before answering. “Marv paid a lot of attention to me, for sure. At first I was really flattered. It feels good to have someone tell you you’re special, you know? After my sister went to jail, a lot of people in town started ignoring me, or talking about me behind my back.”
“That must not have been easy,” I said, remembering my teen years. My classmates had looked at me and seen my mother, who’d had a bad reputation in town. I’d gotten out of Haven Harbor as soon as I could. “But at least you’ll be leaving in about a month, right? For college?”
“Yes. And now I have Linc to talk with. We’re at different schools, so I’ll miss him this fall, but we’ll both be in Maine, and we’ll keep in touch, I’m sure. And working here this summer has meant I haven’t had to see a lot of the people who looked down at me and my family.”
“Marv’s paying attention to you must have felt good, too.
