Chapter Fourteen

I’m standing on the outskirts of Kushni with a long list of ingredients and a puzzled expression. Makri’s similarly puzzled, and actually scratches the tip of her left ear, something I’ve rarely seen her do.

‘What are we supposed to do now?’

I shake my head. ‘I don’t know whether to help Deeziz or not. Maybe we should just tell Lisutaris and let her decide.’

‘Good idea, let’s do that.’

We head towards the wagon. I halt. ‘Except then Deeziz won’t tell us how to find the gold and the city will starve.’

‘Will that really happen?’

‘Hungry citizens are already drifting towards the Palace. Soon there will be an ugly mob outside, demanding food.’

Makri screws up her face in concentration. ‘Maybe Lisutaris could force Deeziz to tell us?’

‘Deeziz survived the most powerful spell ever unleashed in Turai and then managed to travel to a safe house. I’m not sure anyone can make her do anything.’

There’s another long pause.

‘I think we should tell Lisutaris,’ says Makri, eventually. ‘That’s what our Commander would want.’

I shake my head. ‘I’m thinking the opposite. We can do more good if we help Deeziz. Besides, I have a feeling she might know if we report her to Lisutaris. She might destroy the beer out of spite.’

Makri rolls her eyes. ‘I didn’t think it would be long till the beer won the argument.’

‘Not just the beer, Makri. There’s the Green Jewel too. Very important item for Turai’s defence.’

We hover uncertainly on the cracked, filthy pavement. Shady looking characters glance at us at they filter into Kushni although no one approaches us. A large man in a captain’s uniform and an Orcish-looking woman with two swords at her hip aren’t easy targets for casual criminals. Makri still shows a preference for reporting Deeziz’z presence to the Palace.

‘Don’t forget about your womb,’ I remind her. ‘Deeziz says she can heal it.’

‘You don’t care about my womb!’

‘Of course I do. It’s been concerning me for some time. We should find these herbs.’

Makri scowls at me. ‘I know you’re only doing this for the beer.’

‘Nonsense. My only interest is the welfare of the city.’

We walk towards the wagon.

‘If people find out what we’re doing I’ll probably be executed as an Orcish spy,’ says Makri.

‘Don’t worry, I’ll be executed as well. Where are we going to find healing herbs?’

‘Chiaraxi, I suppose. She was travelling along with the baggage train. She’ll be back in her shop now, if it still exists.’

Chiaraxi is a herbal healer in Twelve Seas. I’ve had cause to use her services in the past. Makri knows her quite well, partly through their involvement in the Association of Gentlewomen. Not that I’d class Chiaraxi as a gentlewoman and Makri obviously isn’t, but apparently they let anyone in. We climb back into our wagon. I can feel perspiration running down my neck. ‘Is Chiaraxi going to have a full stock of supplies so soon after the war?’

Makri isn’t certain. ‘When I talked to her on the march she only had a few basic herbs. She
