Chapter 16
THORN
I flip the plastic chair around and sit on it, facing a terrified looking Neal. I could tell him how I sensed Kysonâs panic from three blocks away while I was still debating whether showing up at his job was the right thing to do, but thatâs not for his ears. Itâs for Kysonâs.
âSo listen, my guy,â I start, folding my arms across the top of the chair. âSeems you get off on harassing Kyson and making his life more difficult than it has to be.â
âN-no. Iâm the manager. Itâs my job to make sureâ ââ
I raise my hand to stop him. âSave the bullshit. I can see through it from a thousand miles away. Iâll get right to the point. I wonât tolerate anyone mistreating that sweet man. Do you hear me? Not a raised voice or a condescending remark or a dig at him. When he gets off work, he better not even have a hair out of place, or youâll be seeing me again.â
Nealâs face turns bright red. âThat sounds like a threat.â
âIt is absolutely not a threat. You see, with a threat thereâs always a chance it wonât happen, but I can fucking promise you, Neal, that if you so much as look at him wrong, itâs happening.â I stand, pushing the chair so that it falls back and Neal flinches. I place my hands on the edge of his desk, leaning forward to close the gap between us. âIâm a rather protective boyfriend. Feel free to test me. Iâll enjoy every second of proving it to you.â
His pulse quickens as a sheen of sweat forms on his brow. He smells off somehow. Unnatural. Oh fuck.
âWhenâs the last time you had a physical?â
Neal pulls his head back slightly. âWhat?â
âThe doctor. Have you had a checkup?â
âNo. Why are you asking me that?â
I blow out a breath. âI think you should. I have a nose for⦠ailments. You should get checked out.â
âUh, yeah, okay.â
âNow, Neal, Iâm gonna leave. Youâre gonna be nice to Kyson from now on. Do we have an understanding?â
He nods rapidly, gripping the arms of his chair.
âGood. I knew you were a reasonable man.â
I leave his office, ignoring the curious glances of the two workers as I return to the front. I find Kyson talking to an older couple in front of a display of dusty books. His whole face lights up as he talks, pointing to several of the treasures on the table. The couple choose two and thank him for his time. He swings around, his smile turning shy when he sees me.
âHi, Thorn.â
âHello, sweetheart. Can we talk?â
âUm, Iâd love to but Iâm still working.â
âAnd when do you get off?â
He glances at his watch. âFour hours still.â
âIâll wait.â
âUm, you donât have to.â He exhales, moving away slightly. âWhat did you say to Neal?â
âIâll tell you all about it. Can I pick you up after work?â
âMaybe we need a few days apart. Everything got so intense last night andâ ââ
I move suddenly, appearing right before him and putting my index finger over his lips.
