MT. ABBOTT BY A LADY IN AN AFTERNOON.
A little stroll up to Marion Lake, made for exercise on a rainy afternoon developed quite unpremeditatively into a delightful ascent of Abbott Peak, which is here recorded to encourage any good walker with some experience on steep slopes to try the same.
Starting at 1.45, Miss P. F. Morris of Philadelphia and the writer left Glacier House in the characteristic rainy weather of this place, and reached Marion Lake in something less than an hour. Ignoring adverse conditions and led on by the hope of a change, we pressed on in clouds and rain over the amphitheatre at treeline (marked by numerous stone-men) and scrambled up the steep slopes to the ridge, which was reached about 4. To our delight, the weather then suddenly changed and the clouds broke away; revealing a most wonderful view on all sides. After a halt of 15 minutes, we passed along the mile or so of arete with speed, and arrived at the summit of Mt. Abbott at 5.05, Mt. Afton towering above us very near and temptingly. Lack of time prevented thoughts of its ascent, however. The view of the Sir Donald, Dawson, Bonney & Swiss groups of peaks was magnificent.
Return was made the same way, starting at 5.20, & Glacier House was reached at 7.10, the descent from Marion Lake being made in 18 minutes. The whole trip was made in quick time for a lady.
A phenomenon worth noting occurred on the ridge. After the breaking up of the worst clouds, the sun shone clearly on the western side of the arete, while for a 1/2 hour the mists continued thick on the east side. Our shadows were cast very distinctly on the mists, around these were perfect rainbow shadows in circles like halosâa most extraordinary mist effect.
