During supper, I tell mom and dad the exciting news.

They already know; Malik’s parents spoke with them last week.

He wanted to surprise me with the news.

“Malik is a great friend,”

I say as I pass the potatoes.

Mom reminds me the trip is almost a

year away and to not focus too

heavily on it and lose sight of today.

“Yes, Ma’am,” I say, but inside,

I am already deciding what

I am going to pack in my suitcase.

During recess, Malik and I plan his birthday.

Even though I have

moved six times, I have never been on a cruise ship.

This is new to me.

Malik says I am going to love it.

His family takes a cruise every year.
