They’d settled on one hundred dollars a day for the trip to Victoria. Not a huge daily rate, but Oliver had been adamant he wasn’t accepting anymore. As soon as she got home, she transferred another five hundred dollars into his account and sent him a text. She wanted him to continue working on the case without having to check in with her about money all the time. She’d had a look at some other websites for private investigators and knew if she’d hired someone else it would probably cost her more. This was a lot more involved than your run-of-the mill cheating spouse case, she guessed.

She sighed. At some stage she would have to think about what her financial limit was for all of this. For now, she wanted answers. Maybe when her dad woke up, he could give them to her. Or she may draw a blank with him as well. For the moment, Oliver was her best chance at finding out about her mother’s past and her biological father.

Her mobile phone lay silent on the table beside her. Still no word from Luke. This state of purgatory couldn’t go on. She picked up the phone and called. He answered after two rings.

“Hello?”

“Luke, hi. Listen, can you be at my place this afternoon at five?”

There was a lengthy pause. “Um, I guess.”

“Great. See you then.”

“Sure.”

She ended the call and took a deep breath, steeling herself for her next task.
