Chapter Twenty-Nine

And now, what to do with you, boy…

Ice ripped through his veins, turning his moan to a bleat of pain. He was cold to the core, deathly cold, so cold that he waited for the rattling chills to break his bones, to shatter his frozen flesh.

If there had been a way to grab death, he would have seized it in his teeth.

When he thought he could bear no more, the numbness began.

Creeping, blessed numbness, embracing him with absence of pain, with absence of… everything.

After a life such as his, absence was both blessing and reward. Even his heart, with its sluggish, traitorous attempts to beat, ceased to feel cold and jagged in his chest, and slowly, the comfort of numbness, of absence, seeped into his innermost being.

Death, blessed death.
