Higher levels of physical security can dramatically reduce the chances of break-ins

Most criminals hate using excessive force multiple times – don’t forget that they need to run away before they are seen or heard. The use of repeated force will create noise and reveal their presence to home members as well as neighbours.

Burglar Proofing Your Windows

Window security is one of the most common security flaws. Sadly, most homeowners overlook physical window security in favour of more high-tech or expensive home security solutions such as alarm systems and surveillance cameras.

You already know that burglars can enter your home through the doors as well as windows. Now that you are thinking about investing in high quality door locks and supporting hardware, it’s time you pay attention to window security, one of the most vulnerable entry points.

Once you tighten the security of your windows, breaking into your home would be too much work for the amateur burglar.

Best Ways to Improve Window Security

The Use of Reinforced Glass

You can reinforce your glass windows with secure materials using several methods. Perhaps the most common method is the use of tempered glass. This type of glass is more durable than ordinary glass, hence is more difficult to break. Interestingly, tempered glass is one of the most affordable reinforced glass options.

There’s another type of glass called ‘safety glass.’ This safety or laminated glass features a layer of vinyl placed between two sheets of ordinary window glass. If a burglar has to break safety glass, he would have to hit the same spot again and again and this creates a great deal of noise. This is one of the reasons laminated or safety glass proves to be an excellent burglar deterrent.

If you don’t want to invest in laminated or tempered glass, you can go for wire mesh or bullet proof glass for extra security. Remember these are pricey and don’t necessarily provide additional security benefits for home.

Polycarbonate & Plexiglas Windows

Windows made of acrylic are known as Plexiglas windows and they have the same thickness as traditional glass windows. However the main difference is that Plexiglas windows are at least ten times stronger.

Polycarbonate windows are very secure and resilient, but they are also more expensive. Surprisingly, polycarbonate windows are 250 times stronger than safety glass windows and almost 10 times stronger than Plexiglas windows.

Windows with Metal Bars

Putting up iron bars on your window can make your home secure and burglar resistant. Even if the intruder manages to break the glass, he would have a hard time squeezing through the bars in order to get inside and burgle your home.

Most homeowners are against the idea of metal bars. They feel the use of metal bars can make their home look more like a prison. However, you can find companies that specialize in beautiful, decorative metal bars and you can actually get them customized to match the design of your home.

Keep in mind this is also a fire hazard, as it keeps the bad guys out, but also keeps the good guys in.
