They spent what remained of the night at Marinus’ house. He was eager to hear news from London, and though not given any details, he was pleased to hear the government had sent Dutch agents back home.

“The only things we hear are from Radio Oranje, and I’m sure they don’t tell us everything. You know, with the Germans listening in as well. So I’m glad our queen and government are working hard behind the scenes.”

“It’s not easy,” Christiaan said. “They’re dependent on the whims of the Brits.”

Christiaan was surprised to see it getting light outside and yawned. Marinus caught this and said, “If you want to take a quick nap, I have free bedrooms upstairs.”

Before Christiaan could answer, Bram responded. “That would be perfect. We’ll need to be on our way soon, but I suppose it’s too early for us to be out now.”

“It would raise suspicion to find three men walking along these parts at four in the morning, yes,” Marinus said, standing up and signaling for them to follow him. “Why don’t you rest a few hours, and I can drop you off at the train station when I go into town?”

“Much appreciated, Marinus,” Bram said as they mounted the stairs. Marinus showed them to a large bedroom with two bunk beds and wished them a good remainder of the night.

“I’ll take first watch,” Bram said as Christiaan sat on the bottom bunk, undoing his boots. He hadn’t even considered keeping watch. “Then I’ll wake you in two hours, Christiaan.”

Christiaan didn’t bother undressing further as he crashed onto the bed, sleep instantly overcoming him.
