They spent what remained of the night at Marinusâ house. He was eager to hear news from London, and though not given any details, he was pleased to hear the government had sent Dutch agents back home.
âThe only things we hear are from Radio Oranje, and Iâm sure they donât tell us everything. You know, with the Germans listening in as well. So Iâm glad our queen and government are working hard behind the scenes.â
âItâs not easy,â Christiaan said. âTheyâre dependent on the whims of the Brits.â
Christiaan was surprised to see it getting light outside and yawned. Marinus caught this and said, âIf you want to take a quick nap, I have free bedrooms upstairs.â
Before Christiaan could answer, Bram responded. âThat would be perfect. Weâll need to be on our way soon, but I suppose itâs too early for us to be out now.â
âIt would raise suspicion to find three men walking along these parts at four in the morning, yes,â Marinus said, standing up and signaling for them to follow him. âWhy donât you rest a few hours, and I can drop you off at the train station when I go into town?â
âMuch appreciated, Marinus,â Bram said as they mounted the stairs. Marinus showed them to a large bedroom with two bunk beds and wished them a good remainder of the night.
âIâll take first watch,â Bram said as Christiaan sat on the bottom bunk, undoing his boots. He hadnât even considered keeping watch. âThen Iâll wake you in two hours, Christiaan.â
Christiaan didnât bother undressing further as he crashed onto the bed, sleep instantly overcoming him.
