Luna

For the life of me, I do not understand what Lola sees in Castor Dewitt, but I won’t deny she looks happier than I’ve ever seen her. Listening to her talk about her wedding and all the plans she’s making for her new life in France hurts my heart, but only because I’ll miss her, not because I’m jealous. I want her to be happy and deep down, I want to feel like that too.

What’s missing? It can’t still be him. It’s been so long.

If Castor is good to Lola and makes her happy, then he can’t be all that bad, but I’m not crazy about the way he’s simply absconded with her over the past week. Since their engagement, I’ve hardly seen her. I planned this breakfast two days ago, hoping to have some quiet time with my baby sister, but apparently, he can’t keep away.

Halfway through my second mimosa, Castor comes charging in with something on his mind.

“Luna, when was the last time you spoke to Max Butler?” He stares at me, and piques Lola’s curiosity.

“Max Butler? Luna? Are they still trying to set you up with him?” Lola leans in, concerned I’m being bullied into marrying a man whose handprint is still etched brightly on my ass after we played a particularly over the top version of Daddy’s bad girl last night.

“Why?” I chirp.

Oh damn, I just gave myself away. But I can’t even pretend to be angry at him. Even when he’s a huge pervert, he always makes me feel like a princess.

“Were they trying to arrange you to him?” Castor’s so nosy. Before I can answer, Lola speaks for me.

“They were. Our parents had no intention of letting her say yes to you. Mother said Max Butler wanted to marry her. His father plans to invest a ton of money in Daddy’s hotels. Have you seen him, Luna?”

“Just a little.” There’s no sense in denying it. All this will come out soon enough.

“What the hell does that mean? You said you hate him.” Lola pounds the table and Castor knits his brow.

There’s no easy answer, but I promised Max I wouldn’t tell people I hate him.

“I have needs and you’ve been gone all week. Max has been texting like crazy. That night it stormed, he came over to keep me company and then came back the night after that. But one more night and I put an end to it, I swear.” I lie. He’s been by every night and some afternoons. We’re making dinner later tonight.

Oh, crap! I need to pick up some dessert before I go home. He wants something with whipped cream.

“Luna! You said you hate him! How do you get hot and bothered for someone you hate?”

I don’t need this judgement.

“I never said I hated having sex with him. I don’t know why he wants to marry me, but he does. His father is helping him make it happen. He doesn’t give a fuck about Orson except they had a deal to try to make this happen.
