Chapter Twelve
Two minutes earlier.
Danielle held her breath as his boots entered the utility room just a foot away from her. She sat huddled behind a small wall that separated the two rooms and pleaded to any god that would answer to not let him take one more step. She could hear his deep, labored breaths that sounded like the result of twenty-five years of chain smoking. She tried to envision a plan for when he would eventually turn that corner, but her senses escaped her. The most she could fathom to do was scream as loud as her lungs could bare.
âPsst, Jessy Jess, you in here?â He called out in a whisper.
His raspy voice sounded like it was inches from her ears. The thought that this freak actually knew one of their names sent a crawling chill down her spine. In that moment, it came to her. When he crossed the doorway into the kitchen, she would tackle him, and hold him down as long as she could while screaming for Jessica to run for help. It was really the only solution she had. She accepted that it more than likely meant the end for her, but at least Jessica could get away to safety.
She prepared herself to strike, and knelt down like a runner waiting for the starting shot. She began to tremble as the moments ticked by. Every passing second made her grow more unsure about her plan. Could she actually take him down? Could she even hold him in place while Jessica made her escape? What if he just stabs her with something and sprints to Jessica before she makes it out of the door? Her knees began to shake and eventually gave away under her, making her fall back down to sit huddled on the floor. Her head popped up as the clacking of something across the house startled her from her intrusive thoughts.
âOoooh, Jessy,â he sung, âsomething tells me youâre starting to fuck with me.â
Danielle heard his boots start to pound back toward Jessicaâs hiding spot. This was her moment. She didnât waste a second, and slid across the tiles of the kitchen floor by the refrigerator. Without looking, she lifted her hand over the lip of the counter, and felt around for her keys. Nothing. She began to panic as she pulled herself up to give a quick look around, but they werenât there. She began to think that maybe this was all a part of the intruderâs plan, and he must have hid her keys, but that just couldnât be. It was such an obscure place to put them that you wouldnât even notice it if you werenât looking for them. She slumped back down, and thought of where she must have put them.
âYour hand soap smells girly.â He called out, followed by a loud slam. âOh, you asked something, huh?
His voice sounded muffled. He must have been in the back hallway, but who could he be talking to? She was sure there was only one of them, but at this point she was willing to accept anything.
