Joyet had disappeared in the direction of th£ bedroom, and presently emerged, trundling a gigantic and shaky stepladder. He set it up beneath the lantern and held its base while Bencolin mounted. Far up there in the gloom, where it was difficult to see anything at all, we could hear him tapping the lantern and emitting a series of amazed clucks.
"Very rare," he announced, and continued with a lecture of eleborate nonsense; but when he descended the stepladder his face was very grave. While Joyet removed the ladder he went to the table again, where he began ransacking the drawers and going through their litter. There were some papyri, framed between sealed sheets of glass. I saw the fragments of a clay seal, smeared in blue ink; a magnifying glass; a little camel's head of carven ivory; pens, ink, and erasers. Thrown carelessly into a pile of theatre programs lay a pendant of gold cloisonne enamel and lapis-lazuli. Bencolin found at the very bottom a portfolio of leather, from which he drew some neatly written sheets of manuscript.
"Our friend El Moulk has been doing some translating from the papyri, I think," he remarked. "English, too "
The others were not paying much attention, but I glanced over his shoulder when he looked at the conclusion of the second sheet. On it was written in the same copper-plate hand:
