Its scaly body was purple, and its long tail ended in an arrow-shaped crystal. It did not seem to be attacking anyone but merely flew above the warriors of Snjokomu, evading only their larger projectiles, since their arrows simply deflected off its body.
Even surrounded by the chaos of the fight, something about it struck me as odd. Neither the dragon nor the wyvern seemed to be attacking at their full capability, and the wyvern kept looking up to the top of mountains that formed the sides of the crevice.
The mountain tops, as always, were obscured by clouds and fog so I couldn't make out what it could be looking at. Their behavior was very weird indeed, but there was no time to investigate why they were not attacking with all they had. Seika was already casting elemental protection spells on each of us, and I readied myself to cast my strongest ice-based spells.
"Hold it!" Kard shouted. "Something isn't right."
The Smith was about to throw himself into the battle and faltered for a moment to look at him.
"The dragons..." he continued. "They don't look like they're fighting at all. Something else is happening."
"What are you talking about, Kard?" Krysha asked, as she scanned the field for an advantageous position. "Didn't you see them breathing fire at the warriors? Can't you see all the melted snow?"
"No, Krysha, he's right," Man agreed. "Something's not--"
"Look!" Kard interrupted and pointed upward, toward the top of the mountains.
We all looked up to see a flock of colorful bodies flying high above us between the clouds. The bodies of at least forty dragons, wyrms, and wyverns, all circling the sky above us.
The dragons varied in size, with some truly gigantic ones sitting on the sides of the crevice. There was absolutely no way we could ever hope to beat so many dragons.
One by one, the warriors of Arirlun saw what was looming above them, and started to reconsider their next course of action. Adel had drawn both of his swords, but was at a loss as to how he would even begin fighting the creatures above us.
Krysha had already disappeared, while Man focused his attention on Seika, who was pleading with the Smith to retreat.
Kard on the other hand looked determined, as if he already had a plan. It was the first time I'd ever seen him talking to himself, though I couldn't understand a word he was saying.
He had been obsessed with dragons ever since we were kids. His lifelong dream was to meet a dragon. That is, before he lost his chance to receive his mana. Regardless, if there was a single person in the world who would know how to fight this many of them, it would be him.
"Talk to me, Kard!" I shouted and ran toward him. "You're the expert. What should we do?"
"I'm not quite sure about this--" he started, but was interrupted by Adel who'd also sprinted over to us.
"Just say it, Kard!" he shouted.
