Chapter Seven

Seeing the healing bruises and cuts on Dyre’s body, ZenzaLee knew something had gone terribly wrong after he left that night. He came home and ate like a man possessed, making steaks, eggs, and an assortment of other things. When she and Archer woke, the kitchen was bursting forth with meals.

Dyre sat at the table eating. “Come on, you, guys. Let’s eat.”

“How badly were you hurt?” Archer signed before he sat down.

“Not too bad, but I need the fuel.” Dyre spoke and signed at the same time.

“Hurt, fuel?” Zenza asked.

“When a wolf is hurt, they heal quickly, but it takes lots of energy,” Archer signed. “They eat and consume a lot of food...a lot.”

“Thanks for telling me.” Zenza looked at Dyre, and anger simmered within her. “He didn’t tell me a thing.”

Archer signed, “Uh-oh.” He tucked into his food like a young, growing boy should, and Dyre cleared his throat.

“I was going to tell you, but you were sleeping,” he said. “By the time you woke up, my healing was almost done.”

“Was this because of Paul?” Zenza wasn’t worried about Paul in the least—well, worried that Dyre might be arrested for whatever happened.

“No, we sent him packing alive and well, a little ruffled but alive,” he told her, “Even though the wolf within wanted it to be handled another way. We were attacked.”

“By whom?” she asked, shocked. “Who else are we at odds with?”

“You said ‘we.’” Dyre gave her a boyish grin that lightened his usually stern face.

Zenza rolled her eyes. “Stop it. We need to talk about this.”

“Later, when the lip-reader isn’t around,” he said around a mouthful of eggs.

Archer was looking at them and began to sign furiously. “Dad, I need to know this stuff too. I’m going to be part of this pack. I should know the danger. Especially if it’s centered around us as a family.”

“He’s right, and that’s a very adult thing to say,” Zenza signed and said the words to Dyre.

“You’ve accepted her as part of our family, then?” Dyre used his hands to ask his son.

He nodded. “She’s here when you’re not. It’s like having a mom, and she understands me. I like her a lot—do you like me, Miss Ellis?”

“Very much, Archer,” Zenza replied. “I care about you and your dad very much, and since I’m family, maybe you should call me Zenza. At home, I mean. I can’t play favorites at school.”

Archer nodded with a grin, and Dyre looked equally as happy.

“Now,” she said to Dyre firmly, “tell us what we’re up against?”

He sighed. “Archer, you have an uncle. His name is Draugr, and he’s the one who leads the Faction wolves. Long ago, when we first came to these lands, it was my father, Draugr, and me. He wanted to lead the pack, and as it grew and we gathered more resources, he got greedy.

“The village turned into a town, Dad aged, but he knew that Draugr could never lead.” Dyre continued. “He called me out at one of the meetings, and we fought.
