They ended up catching a total of three fish—bass, he’d said—and he planned to grill them for dinner. Everything had gone nicely until she’d screamed when she saw the fish flopping around on the end of the line, which had caused Javier’s composure to completely crumble. He’d doubled over in laughter, unable to contain himself, and although she was ashamed of her reaction, seeing him like that, completely uninhibited and happy, was something she would do it all again for.

Unfortunately, he continued to laugh every time he looked at her, and continued to chuckle to himself even though they’d long returned to the house.

She sat at the kitchen island, watching him after he placed the cleaned and seasoned fish on the kitchen grill. She’d offered to help, but he’d said he wanted to cook for her.

“Javier, didn’t I ask you not to laugh at me for being afraid of the fish?”

That drew another belly laugh from him. He gripped his stomach, shaking his head.

“Please, Belleza, I cannot take anymore. I have not laughed like this in…oh, I do not know if ever.”

He stirred the rice cooking on the stove, still chuckling. Amirah grumbled, but a smile formed on her face. He looked so relaxed, so carefree.

He started to grill vegetables, still wearing a smirk. He then became serious and turned his gaze on her. A shiver ran through her. She didn’t know if she would ever get used to the intensity of those green eyes.

“I need to ask…”

Aw, hell.

Amirah cleared her throat and crossed her legs. She didn’t like how he became so serious so quickly. She wasn’t sure she would like what he planned to ask. His eyes strayed to her bare legs, but he maintained his control and brought his eyes back to hers.

“Señora Isla…she asked me something.” His back was to her now, and he tended to the food on the stove, hyper focused on his task. Amirah sensed the change in him, almost like a nervous energy. She bit her lip in response. Javier didn’t seem like the nervous type.

“What did she ask?”

He took his time answering, taking exaggerated effort in his cooking.

“She asked me to come to dinner at her place.”

“Oh, that’s really sweet—”

“—with you, Belleza.” His eyes met hers. “If you would like, I guess.”

Amirah rubbed her jaw, a grin forming on her face.

“And do you want me to come, Javier?”

He cursed under his breath, a series of rapid Spanish words Amirah was sure would make any Spanish grandmother blush.

He ran his fingers through his hair and blew out a sigh. “You like to be difficult, no?”

She leaned forward, her grin widening. She loved seeing him unsettled like this. It was cute.

“No…” She drew circles with her finger on the quartz countertop, fighting the urge to laugh.

“Then you like to test me.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

The look on Javier’s face nearly broke her composure. He glared at her and turned to fully face her, his scowl deepening.

“Oh, no? So who is ‘playing the coy’ now?”

Amirah’s grin widened even more.
