I woke earlier than usual the following morning. I’d had a fitful night, a combination of the residual pain in my hands and disturbing dream sequences. In one dream, I’d had to watch as Manya was taken into Council custody, wrists and ankles manacled and head hanging in shame. In another, I’d been tied to a set of monkey bars and left to hang by my arms until I thought they’d be torn from their sockets and I agreed to drink human blood. I knew exactly who I blamed for the second. I padded down the stairs barefoot, in only my oversized pajama shirt, on the hunt for caffeine.

As I started the coffee machine, a breeze tugged at the ends of my hair. I could’ve sworn the doors leading to the terrace were closed, but a slight gap showed they were ajar. Perhaps Silas was out in the garden. I went to close them, only to freeze a few feet away. Low voices sounded through the small gap. Sawyer and Crank were out there on the terrace. It sounded as though they were arguing. I crept closer.

“Yer skating on thin ice, boy. I knew I was making a mistake bringing ye here.”

“You didn’t exactly have a choice.”

“I coulda chosen to tell him the truth and let him deal with ye.”

“Well then, I guess it’s fortunate for me that you’re a good man, Crank.”

“Don’t try to butter me up. I know what I am. This was supposed to be simple, but no, ye’ve got to go and get yerself noticed. How hard can it be to hold yer damned tongue?”

“He suspects nothing.”

“He suspects plenty! That one suffers a double dose of original sin, boy, and he’s no fool.”

“He won’t do anything. Not while he needs us. We have until the heist at least.”

“Yeah? And what about when he doesn’t need us anymore, huh? What then?”

“He’s never going to not need you.”

Crank grumbled something inaudible and I crept even closer, my ear practically filling the gap.

“He won’t,” Sawyer said.

“And what if it’s you I’m worried about, eh? Hard to imagine, I know, but there ye have it. I still think ye should take off, while ye can.”

“I’ll leave as soon as I have the information I need.”

“You ain’t never going to find what you’re looking for, Sawyer. Don’t waste yer life chasing ghosts.”

“I have to try. I need to know what happened to her.”

“Knowing ain’t worth shite if yer dead. Why can’t ye just let it lie?”

“I guess I just wasn’t built that way.”

“Aye,” Crank murmured. “At least that’s something we can agree upon. Can ye at the very least stop antagonizing the hybrid? She’s his trigger.”

Infuriatingly, I didn’t catch Sawyer’s response, but Crank clicked his tongue. “Away with ye, I’ve had enough of yer company for one morning.”

Swayer’s boots rang out on the stone and I scrambled backward, moving as quickly as I could. I’d just rounded the counter into the kitchen when Sawyer pulled the terrace door wide. He froze when he saw me, but I reached for a coffee mug and held it up.
