Chapter ten

The Lost Crafters

Ash and Kate descended the grand staircase with their skirts billowing around them, grinning madly, Levi bringing up the rear, trying not to pull at his collar. Kate had chosen to wear her long hair piled high in a soft bun on her head, and somehow she had managed to tame Ash’s wild auburn curls into a bouncing cascade that flowed over her shoulders.

“I hope we’re not too overdressed” murmured Ash as they walked through the sitting room, “I can’t tell you the last time I was dressed this fancy for dinner. For anything really.”

They paused at the entrance to the dining room, drinking in the scene before them.

“I’m going to say we’re not too overdressed at all” replied Kate drily.

In the corner the fire was burning brightly, spreading warmth around the room. The large chandelier was ablaze and its light danced across the walls and ceilings, twisting and turning with the firelight.

At the end of the table closest to the fire and furthest from the kitchen, nine places had been set for dinner. There was one at the head of the table and four either side. Gleaming crystal glasses and silverware lay alongside white china plates edged with gold. The heavy cream curtains had been drawn closed, blocking out the dark grounds beyond and adding an element of intimacy to the oversized room.

Trinity and Fleur hovered near the kitchen door to their right. Trinity’s face was crumpled with nerves and uncertainty, as she twisted the material of her red evening dress between her restless fingers. Her daughter stood listening and nodding calmly as her mother whispered frantically in her direction.

Fleur was a similar size to Kate, and while she did not have the height nor presence of her brother, she possessed an air of certainty that gave her the gravitas her mother lacked. There was a quiet beauty in her young face, and a strong sense of self. Her dark eyes flashed with compassion and care, and there was not a trace of mockery as she soothed her nervy mother, assuring her that she looked wonderful in the grand setting.

Fleur had chosen to wear a buttery yellow dress with long sleeves and white lace trim around the neckline and wrists which complemented her dusky skin and gleaming dark hair. It was a simple outfit, well-made and of high quality, which Fleur wore with ease. The two women continued to speak softly to each other, not yet noticing the new arrivals. Nonchalantly Ash scanned the rest of the room, but there was no sign of Penn.

Kate moved into the room to admire the flower arrangements that adorned the tables, Levi close behind. The sudden movement caught at Trinity’s awareness, and with wide eyes she spun around to face Asher.

“Weaver” she began, then she screwed up her face. “Oh no! You’re not the Weaver. I thought you were for a moment. You look like her. No, actually you don’t”.

Ash saw the familiar glaze in Trinity’s eyes, the look that said ‘I don’t quite see you…you are fading from my mind’.
