Chapter 13
Faithful
My fingers glided the marble railing that had intricate designs on it and was satin smooth to the touch. I admired the light that was coming through the tall stained-glass windows. The artwork showed large ships sailing and what looked like Spain—hundreds of years ago. I reached the top floor of the tower and turned into a narrow hallway, made of beige marble with ribbed vaulted ceilings. A lancet window to my right revealed the clear sunset and the view of the top of the trees of Las Ramblas. There were religious artifacts displayed on shelves inside the marble walls, dating over a thousand years old.
I smelled incense burning and it was coming from a room a few feet in front of me. I peeked inside. The arched wooden door was wide open. Salazar was on his knees praying in front of a beautiful, gold cross and thick white candles lit the room.
“You may enter,” he said.
“I didn't mean to disturb you,” I said, entering the worship room. “I shouldn't be wandering the halls, but the architecture is captivating.”
“You are not disturbing me. I do this every night before the rest of the vampire’s wake, and I ended my prayer when you entered the tower.”
“This place is magnificent. The artwork is unbelievable,” I said, admiring the gold table to my right that had sculpted turned legs and flowery designs.
On top of the table was a tall gold chalice, adorned with rubies, a golden bowl with crackers, for the Lord’s Supper, and an antique bible—the largest I have ever seen. Behind the table was a large mosaic glass of the Lord's crucifixion.
“Skye, are you a faithful woman?” Salazar asked, rising to his feet.
He turned to look at me with a welcoming smile. He held a rosary in his left hand made of rubies and diamonds. His long cloak was made of black silk; it had beautiful gold stitching around the edges. His black vest was medieval, and his pants were silky black. He was barefoot and next to his feet were black velvet slippers with gold designs on them. He slipped his feet inside them.
“To be honest...I believe in God and know he watches over me, but my faith falters because of what I do for a living. I know he does not approve,” I said.
“You don't have to be a thief anymore. God's grace is unchangeable, he bestows blessing on us, even when we don't deserve it. He cannot run out of mercy for your life. It is renewed every day.”
“Do you believe in fate...” I asked with hesitation. “That God has our life planned out already?”
He moved closer to me and his eyes lightly glowed yellow around his rims. I knew he was reading my mind. I became nervous and sighed.
“We are given free will. I don't agree with Vivian's opinion on fate. You see...she has tried to change her dreams by warning the Guardians of their death, but they are warriors and you can't tell a warrior to stay out of battle.
