Chapter Twelve

When Zack drove past the house after his trip into town, five cars were in the drive. Celine was out again, he realized as he parked his old girl by the barn. He fought back the groan. Did that mean Andy and Celine were going to be out here tonight?

He lugged his purchases up to his room. It wasn’t much—the finest twenty bucks could buy at a gas station—but he was hoping it was enough to help Sam relax a little while they hung out. One long-stemmed rose, an overpriced three-pack of condoms, and a six-pack of Fat Tire Ale—the best he could afford. For a second, he’d thought about getting a bottle of wine or something fruity, but then he realized Sam wouldn’t appreciate fruity. The woman liked good beer.

He knew he was being presumptuous with the condoms, but there was a chance that the soft and pretty Sam was going to be waiting for him on the porch tonight—if everyone else went on their merry little way. If not...rubbers kept. There was always next Saturday. Or the one after that.

He showered, trying not to think about the painful state of his dick. Unfortunately, not thinking about his dick left him little else to think about except the silky soft expanse of Sam’s bare back as he’d hooked her bra for her. He stood under the showerhead and fought not to get ahead of himself. There was no guarantee that he’d get to see that back tonight, so he’d better get things under control.

It wasn’t working. He’d never expected that dressing a woman would have been so erotic, but six days later, it was still driving him crazy. Not as crazy as the mental tape of Sam throwing her arms around his neck and kissing him was making him, but still. Throw in lingering smiles over the dinner table and her bare feet under it? By this point, he was just about verifiably insane.

He shaved and put on his new dress shirt, figuring it went better with the rose than a t-shirt. By the time he was down the stairs and out the barn, all the cars were gone, except Andy’s truck. The whole house had bailed while he was in the shower? Suddenly the evening was looking up.

Zack went around to the front of the house. No Sam waiting for him on the porch, just Katydid, her dirty leash still on. When she saw Zack, her tail thumped twice. “What do you think?” he asked the wolf, showing her the rose. Katydid whined. He didn’t take that as an overwhelming vote of confidence.

He stepped up to the door and knocked, rose and beer at the ready and rubbers in his back pocket. He was prepared for anything this evening.

The door swung open, and Zack’s jaw dropped. Anything, that was, but the goddess who stood before him. “Sam?” he managed to croak out. That couldn’t be his cowgirl—could it?

The most beautiful woman he’d ever seen managed a nervous little smile.
