After leaving Hank with Joanne for the day, Miranda sent Jack a message to find out where he was. He told her he was out on Old Tank Farm road, watching for speeders and that she was more than welcome to come and keep him company.

She smiled, remembering the first time she’d sat with him over there. She’d just come to town and hadn’t known what she was getting herself into. As she drove that way, she let the memory of that day fill her mind to pass the time until she saw his truck in the distance.

Pulling up next to his truck, she hurried out of her warm car and jumped into the passenger seat.

“Hey there, beautiful,” Jack said with his sly smile.

“Hey,” she said, nervous about the conversation she was going to have to have. “How’s your day going?”

“It’s going,” he said with a slow nod.

“So I have something I need to talk to you about,” she sighed. “I don’t know how you’re going to feel about it, so don’t shoot the messenger, okay?”

She saw the muscle in his jaw flex as he considered her words. “Okay,” he said carefully.

“The Agency really wants you to start training with me. They want you as an investigator like me and they have said they want you to start getting the feel for how things are with an investigation. How we determine what kind of being we’re looking for and so on. I tried to tell them you’ve been busy but they’re not really patient, unfortunately.” She winced as she told him the last part.

“I guess I can understand that. But I need to make sure I’m still earning my paycheck as Chief. No matter what, I still have bills to pay,” he explained.

“They already thought of that. You’re supposed to get paid for your training too. I’ll report your hours when I report mine. The way I understand it, you’ll get paid roughly what I do.”

“And how much is that?” he asked, his curiosity getting the better of him.

Miranda pulled up her last pay stub on her phone and showed it to him. He let out a low whistle.

“I’m ready when you are then,” he said, unable to hide his smile.

“Don’t forget, there’s a reason we’re paid so well. This is a dangerous job. One that’s already almost killed me a few times. You have to stay on your toes.” The last thing she wanted was for anything to happen to him while they were working together.

“I think that’s where my police training might come in handy, but I’ll be careful,” he nodded.

“Hey, Jack,” a voice called over the radio. It was dispatch.

“Yeah,” he replied.

“I have a call here that Rob Wheaton is out on his tractor and he’s not doing so good. You think you can go out and check on him?”

“Yeah, I’ll head that way,” he replied.

“Do you mind if I ride along?” Miranda asked. Rob Wheaton was a human with a reputation for being an incredibly kind person.
