Violet woke up already dreading the day ahead of her. It was unusual for her. She enjoyed most of her days teaching, spending time with the children, engaging in her many hobbies, learning new things, and honing her various skills. She truly loved her life. But some days, like today, she questioned herself. She questioned their family. There were lots of questions sheâd never voice out loud but still struggled with occasionally.
She wasnât in charge here and she had never been. She wouldnât be until the caretaker of the family died, but that was still decades away hopefully and by then, the children would be grown. She was really just one of the children even though she was grown now. She was often in charge of the little ones, but she listened like they did. She had her role to play, and she stuck to that role. Even on the days it was difficult.
Having been warned that theyâd be taking a trip into town, Violet carefully planned her outfit to fit in. She wore a grey dress that was stylish but simple paired with a dark-blue knit cardigan, black ballet flats, and a pair of glasses she only ever wore when she was going out on these types of outings. She put her hair up in a messy bun with a few strands hanging casually in front of her face. It was more thought than she usually put into her outfits, though it looked far more effortless than her usual attire did.
She gave off the appearance of a young mother, maybe a college student, or a nanny. She looked like someone who had reason to be in the childrenâs section of a library or bookstore, and no one would stop and question her motivations for being there. She was someone who wouldnât raise a lot of eyebrows. She wouldnât draw much attention to herself. Even during this time when everyone would be extra vigilant and on the lookout for predators after what happened with Hazel, Violet wouldnât raise any alarm bells.
That made her feel a little awful about this whole thing. She didnât like deceiving people. She didnât like being the kind of person you warned your children about. She didnât like cultivating a sense of trust only to use that in a way others would be horrified at. She especially didnât like convincing children to go with her, only to have to see their tears of horror when they realized she was taking them. Their pleas to return them back to their parents wore down her resolve each time.
But these kids wouldnât come here on their own, and this life was so much better for them. She was doing what was best for them. Perhaps she had to use unsavory means to get them here, but once they were here, they did become quite happy after a while. She had become quite happy after a while, and she never wanted to leave. She knew one day theyâd feel that way too.
