Chapter Fifteen

Dana quickly asked Teresa where she was and if she was safe.

Teresa hesitated before answering. “I’m in Athens, but please, don’t tell anyone. Especially not Luca.”

“What happened?”

“On Monday night, I was having some drinks with David and his wife. I wasn’t having much fun. I was worried that Luca would find me—you know, if he made the rounds of all the clubs.”

“He was looking for you.”

“Yeah, I bet he was. Anyhow, as I was leaving, I ran into this nice guy, Todd, that I met on the boat to Delos. We started talking. I told him what was going on, and he offered to take me to his hotel. It’s not what you think. Todd is gay. He was alone here but hadn’t had any luck with the guys in town. So, that’s where I was Monday night. Yesterday, since I had my purse and my camera gear, Todd took me to the airport. I was hoping that Sandros or you could mail my clothes to the Electra Palace Hotel. I know it’s a lot to ask, but Sandros can add the expense to my hotel bill. There’s an open charge there on my credit card.”

“We can do that.”

“Look, I don’t want to make a complaint or anything, but Luca, well, he practically raped me. I’m a little bruised and sore, but at least I’m on the pill so that’s not a problem. I don’t know what happened to make him change so much. He didn’t behave like this in New York.”

“Sometimes people disguise who they are to get what they want,” Dana told her.

“Well, he certainly fooled me. Anyway, I’m extremely embarrassed that I put all of you to so much trouble. Please tell the class I’m sorry. Just don’t mention that I’m in Athens. I’ll stay here until my clothes arrive.”

“We’ll say you flew home.”

“Would you? Oh, thank you!” She dictated the address of the Electra Palace to Dana.

After she hung up, Dana explained the situation to Sandros, who offered to have the maid pack Teresa’s things and to hide the suitcase behind the desk, whereupon he would take it to the post office himself.

She clapped him on the back affectionately. “You’re the best, Sandros!”

He gave her a half-bow.

Julian and Hasina had joined the cluster in the lobby. Dana led the group to the room where the projector was set up and closed the door.

“I have some news about Teresa. She called from the airport in Athens. She’s about to board a plane for New York.”

“What happened?” Mike asked.

“I don’t want to go into the details, but as you know, she had trouble with Luca. Late Monday, she ran into someone she knew who put her up for the night. Yesterday, she left Mykonos—I guess no one at the airport realized she was a missing person. The police probably didn’t notify them because of all the confusion in town,” Dana said. “She asked me to thank everyone for being so kind and to apologize for causing you concern.
