Chapter Thirteen

IVY

On Monday, Jenny got a call from Ternity. He said the friends were going to drop him off at the ice cream shop near the post office, probably about two o’clock. We wanted to visit Emily in the hospital, so we told Jenny we’d pick him up and left the ranch early to see her.

She had several other visitors so we stayed only a few minutes. The swelling inside her head, which they were calling a subdural hematoma, was back to normal, she said, and her arm was in a sling. Mac asked if she’d be returning to continue the filming on the movie.

Her answer? “No way. I’m never going near that or any other cave ever again. Not even if they made me a star, paid me a million bucks, and gave me a limousine and a full body makeover.”

Me too, although if the full body makeover included a height increase, I might be tempted—

On second thought, no, not even for a height increase.

We found Ternity sitting at a table in front of the ice cream shop eating an ice cream bar, a duffel bag at his feet. He was wearing khaki pants, cut well above the ankles as before, black suspenders, a red plaid shirt, heavy boots, and a floppy leather hat with a feather in it. Elsewhere he might have stood out in that outfit, but here he seemed to fit right in. Another young man eating two scoops of strawberry ice cream was wearing a long white robe, flip-flops, black toenail polish, and a red bandanna knotted at the back of his head. He fit in too.

I like a place where everybody fits in.

Ternity jumped up to greet us. He gave me a hug. “Hey, good to see you! Want an ice cream bar?”

“Sure.” I sat down beside Ternity, and Mac went in to get the ice cream.

“Did you know there’s been a collapse at the tunnel?” I asked. “There’s a big pile of rock at the entrance, although it isn’t completely blocked.”

“Jenny told me on the phone. And that you were in it when it happened. You were lucky to get out alive.”

“I think it was a God thing.”

He considered that for a moment. “Could be. This going to stop the movie?”

“The director is quoted as saying it will continue. He’s still here and so is the leading lady, Gloria Dixon.”

Ternity leaned forward, ice cream bar poised halfway to his mouth. “Gloria Dixon is in the movie? Gloria Dixon is here?”

“You’re familiar with her?”

“I haven’t been to the movies in years, but she was my favorite actress way back when. I especially liked her in . . . let’s see, what was the name of that movie? I had a VHS tape of it and must have seen it a dozen times when I was lonely after my wife left. I remember! Blue Skies and Sweet Dreams, that was it.”

“Maybe you’ll get a chance to meet her here.”

“I hope so!”

“Meet who?” Mac returned with the ice cream bars and handed one to me.
