SIXTEEN
Tiny, minuscule grains of sand glide over my skin with each pass I make with my hand. Iâm lying on my stomach, attempting to tan the back side of my body. Iâm not lying on a towel, and the damp sand has managed to sneak its way into every crevice.
Iâm resting on my elbows, watching the waves roll in and out, paying attention to every detail. There are only a few more days left of the reunion and part of me feels as if I havenât done much. Between the constant bonfires Miles insists on having and the single vineyard tour weâve been on, I canât help feeling as if Iâm missing something. Itâs like I havenât connected all the dots.
Levi has only mentioned vaguely about his history with Miles the night he dragged me into pretending to be his fiancée. I know Miles has to do with Leviâs scheme. I just donât know how. Or why.
Itâs a nagging idea Iâve been trying to let go of ever since the start of this reunion. The distance and silence between Levi and Miles speaks volumes. He didnât tell me how it went with Miles, but I havenât worried much about it. Any time I ask Levi about his history with Miles or even their conversations, heâs quick to stop me. Iâve simply stopped worrying about it, figuring Levi will tell me when heâs ready.
I spread my fingers across the sand and fan my hand across the surface, creating a half circle. Mindlessly, I draw lines in the half circle, making it look like a rainbow.
I yelp when the strap of my bikini tied around my back is quickly pulled back and let go, snapping onto my skin.
âHey.â I laugh, half rolling over.
Levi lies down beside me, sporting his signature mischievous smile. âYou think youâre tan enough yet?â
âNo.â I laugh, rolling back onto my stomach. I continue playing with the sand. I drag my index finger through the lines. âWhen we go back home, I want to make sure I look like I was on vacation.â
âTechnically you arenât.â
Itâs a simple statement and one of fact, but still, my stomach flips. I try not to look at Levi. Not because of regret. But because I know the feelings Iâve harbored for him since we were in high school are true.
Itâs one thing to spend years building a fantasy in your head. Itâs another to be living it, realizing itâs in fact not a fantasy. Itâs true and real.
Although Iâm confident, I know my feelings for Levi are real, I donât know how he feels. I wonât dare ask him. Despite the fact that heâs followed through on his promise of us fucking on every piece of furniture before the reunion is over and him finding the smallest moments to touch me, Iâm not convinced. Itâs hard to break a years-long cycle of routine thinking when it comes to him.
Thatâs the issue with Levi Hawkins. Deep down, I know heâs still the same Levi I came here with.
