The next morning, Stephen Hartmann was arrested for attempted murder. He was arraigned in the tiny courtroom at Ferndale City Hall, and then sent to the Humboldt County Jail in Eureka to await his trial. Not long after, Emily appeared on the deserted street in front of the hotel. A steady freezing rain soaked her hair and clothes. Mud caked her shoes and the hem of her dress. Her auburn eyes glared at the hotel’s third-floor windows.

“Janek Walesa, you dirty bastard! I know you’re up there, and I know you can hear me! I know you and your worthless friends did this to Stephen! You and that dirty Mick and that half-breed Mexican whore! You’re nothing but an ignorant Pollock. Do you hear me?”

Curious faces peered from the hotel windows. Lucas stepped out of his general store onto the footway to see what the commotion was about. In suite 302, Janek, Guthrie, and Evan heard Emily loud and clear.

“I’m gonna go down there and shut that woman up for good,” Guthrie said. “She can call the two of you all the names she wants, but she ain’t talking that way about my daughter.”

“No,” Janek said. “Let her go on. She’s making a fool of herself.”

Guthrie looked at Evan. “I reckon you agree with that?”

Evan shrugged.

Emily continued her tirade. “Come on, you coward, answer me! Oh, I forgot. You’re incapable of answering me because you’re a crippled freak confined to your bed. I’ll wager your cock won’t get hard now! No one would want your filthy Pollock babies anyway.”

Sheriff Tate walked through the muddy street to stop Emily’s ranting. “Mrs. Hartmann, I know you’re upset, but you must stop this. Besides, you’re gonna catch your death out here in this rain. Let me take you home.”

“I’m not through with you, Janek, do you hear me? You’re going to answer to me, you bastard! I will get what I want!”

“Stop it, Mrs. Hartmann! Are you gonna go home quietly or do I have to drag you kicking and screaming?”

She was desperate to get Janek’s attention. Her ego had been damaged each time he rejected her advances, and it wouldn’t heal until she consummated her sexual desire for him.

“Mrs. Hartmann?”

Emily knew her behavior was ridiculous. There was no value in continuing to make a scene. “I would appreciate it if you walked me home, Sheriff Tate.”

Guthrie watched her through the window. “Looks like Dell’s taking her home. I reckon we oughta get back to what we were doing. Janek, are you gonna sign them contracts or are you gonna just stare at them?”

“I can’t sign them. I don’t understand what they say.”

“What are you talking about? We drew those up ourselves,” Evan said.

Janek tossed the contracts onto the coverlet. “Something’s wrong. I can’t concentrate. I…” He closed his eyes and rubbed his temples. His headache was incessant; it beat at his brain and confused his thoughts.

“Finish what you were going to say,” Evan said, trying to hide his apprehension.

Janek opened his eyes and whispered, “I’m faded.
