Reynevan had underestimated Samson Honey-Eater.
He hadnât even managed to saddle his horse in the stable when he felt eyes burning on the back of his neck. He turned around and stood like a pillar of salt, holding the saddle in both hands. He swore, then shoved the saddle vigorously onto the horseâs back.
âDonât condemn me,â he said, pretending to be completely preoccupied with the harness. âI have to follow them. I wanted to avoid farewells. Or actually farewell discussions that would have been a waste of time and achieved nothing except unnecessary strife. I thought it would be betterâ¦â
Samson, leaning against the lintel, folded his arms on his chest and said nothing, but his expression was more than eloquent.
âI must go after them,â Reynevan blurted out after a moment of tense hesitation. âI cannot do otherwise. Understand me. I wonât get a chance like this again. Providenceââ
âSir Hayn of Czirne brings many associations to my mind, too,â said Samson, âbut I wouldnât call any of them providential. Ah well, I understand you. Though I canât say it comes easy.â
âHayn of Czirne is the Sterczasâ enemy. The enemy of Kunz Aulock. My enemiesâ enemy and thus a natural ally for me. Owing to him, I may have the chance to avenge my brother. Donât sigh, Samson. Itâs neither the time nor the place for another discussion ending with the conclusion that revenge is a futile, senseless thing. My brotherâs murderers not only peacefully walk the Earth but are also hunting me, threatening me with death and tormenting the woman I love. No, Samson. I wonât flee to Hungary, leaving them here in their pride and triumph. I have the opportunity, I have an ally, Iâve found an enemy of my enemies. Czirne announced that heâd disembowel the Sterczas and Aulock. Perhaps itâs futile, but I want to help him do it and be there when he does. I want to watch him disembowel them.â
Samson said nothing. And Reynevan marvelled once again at how much thoughtfulness and wise concern his dull eyes and chubby idiotâs face could express. And how much mute but evident reproach.
âScharleyâ¦â Reynevan stammered, tightening the girth. âItâs true that Scharley helped me, did plenty for me. Why, you were a witness, more than once. But no matter how often I brought up the subject of revenge against the Sterczas, he always refused, mocking me at the same time and treating me like a stupid boy. He even makes fun of Adèle, endlessly trying to dissuade me from going to ZiÄbice!â
The horse stamped and snorted, as though Reynevanâs agitation was affecting it. Reynevan breathed out and calmed down.
âTell him not to bear me a grudge, Samson. Dammit, Iâm not ungrateful, Iâm aware how much heâs done for me. But I think the best way of repaying him is by going. He said himself: Iâm the biggest risk. Itâll be easier for him without me. For both of youâ¦â
He fell silent.
âIâd like you to come with me, but I wonât ask you to.
